Can i model for ESF with 3dsmax 4.2 ?

You need plugins for that.
Export Plug is in the hlsdk
For import try google

There isnt a plugin for importing, yet. Believe me, Ive looked.

You can use Milkshape to export the referrence .smd (its the one that looks like name_of_model.smd) to a .3ds, then import with 3DSMax.

there is an smd importer. search in google for "smd importer".

btw, mdls aren't just the models. the model (mesh) is in smd format. then all the animations are in smd format too. then these are compiled into mdl.
