Get some perspective dude. When you want to know something about 10 people, and you just ask 1 of the 10 persons about his information. Of course that is not reliable information. But when you are asking 300,000 people, your information is pretty much accurate. Hell, most of the medicine you take when you are ill have probably been tested by fewer people. And take in account that these medicine will be shipped across the entire world. Do you really think that scientists, when researching certain stuff, evaluate more than 1% of the entire world population? No, because then they would have to hold a survey among more than 65 million people! 300,000 people in this case is more than enough.

For crying out loud, just see how many professional websites refer to the Steam survey: http://www.google.nl/search?q=bigge...&rls=org.mozilla:nl:official&client=firefox-a

330,000 out of 25,000,000 is equivalent to 1/100. Basic math skills. Get some. Reporting on the Steam hardware survey and using it for practical purposes in games are two different things. Anybody can read back statistics, that doesn't make them accurate or reliable.

Well, that's what you think. We can't deny that.
But I suppose they should follow the very, not reliable, steam survey.

Hi, I was looking for the steam survey over CPU extensions, as it appears they've stopped reporting it, and came across this forum.

I registered just to say that Spunky is a blithering idiot and should refrain from opining about statistics. The standard error for a simple random sample is sqrt(p*(1-p)/n), where p is the reported percentage and n the number of samples.

Note that the size of the total population is irrelevant.

Also note that if you put in n = 330000 people and p = 0.988 you get 0.02%.

A survey of a couple of hundred randomly chosen people would tell you with acceptable error bounds that nearly everyone had SSE2.

Welcome to the forums, please keep a civil tone during your stay. There are nicer ways to say GuyX was wrong than GuyX is an idiot.
