I read over it, but artist do make it because of mp3 exposure.

I would never heard of Breaking Benjamin if it wasnt for a certain HL2 music video.

Or some other rock bands through a certain dutch weblog.(Flabber)

Alot of music, I see/hear is via internet and I'm not the only person.

playing guitar is a perfectly affordable hobby for me... making a career out of it isnt. and thats the point.

if people want to make music because they enjoy it, then its a hobby, and it can be done in their bedroom, at no cost.

if people want to make a living out of it, it costs a ****load. and thats what you fail to realise. also, dont question a warning in a thread, if you have a problem with the descision, pm someone higher in the chain, and see what they say. imo the warning stands, it was inapropriate for you to post that.

now id like to encourage everyone to calm down a bit please, including you pride. i know this is a subject close to your heart, but try to keep calm =] (everyone).

I was already pmed.

With career, you mean making out of it living?

Because you can make a living out of it, if you are GOOD enough without asking retardly much for your own made CDs or concerts.

And no offense at ALL, but if you learned from your own experince that you cant make it, maybe you should question your skills or type of music.(Since noone is gonna look for a cd of a local band on the internet(Which is pretty hard to find) if they ask a reasonable price for a cd)

Questioning Axman's talent with a guitar is foolish at best.

Watch the retarded talk, and your bull**** no-fact posts. Recording music = Not as costly as pressing the CD's.

Maybe he knows how to handle a guitar and plays pretty good, but still is a subjective view.

Well im not too big on radio..All the songs i need are on my ipod, and if thee happens to be a new song I like, i admit, i look for it on the internet, but I rarely find it, so I just listen to the music video of it. about 1/3 of the songs i listen to is is rap or hip hop, and since a lot of new rap songs suck, that is not a big problem for me, so the occasional CD suits me well, either converting the songs to mp3 from my own cd or my brother's, which is the same as playing his cd in my boom box. If i were to buy my own when my borther already has them, thats liek buying 2 playstations so we both can play :S

But, to me a lot of people here seem to be more fond of music..So its kinda hard for me to udnerstand at times...I could see a non main stream band/singer giving out samples of their work, i see it all the time. I dont know the process of getting your cd onto a shelve...But usually, the non mainstream band albumbs are worth buying. Pop artist usually, at least to me, have 1-3 good songs out of 12-20, which is not a good ratio for buying it. Plus, i think it would hurt even more, since there is so much compettion, having someone buy the cd is gold, so not much reason to download all the songs...

Not saying that you shouldn't pay for rich people's music, just saying i would probably choose to pay for the underdog's. I dont think they get a whoel lot of concerts, commercials, movies, ect ect..

Recording studio time is hundreds of dollars an hour. Even my amateur recording setup here, as I said earlier, is technically over $6000/$7000 dollars worth of stuff.

It costs less than ten cents per CD, artwork and all, to press the final product.

'Nuff said.

This is pretty much what I meant. Younger, new artists need the support a lot more than longtime staples of radio play need it. They don't get a lot of this stuff, and it's all for the same reasons--it's a gamble that record companies don't want to take these days until the turnaround is more of a guarantee.

Generally, artists don't own the recording studio or studio equipment they're recording in, Gir. :p

i know, but the reason why it costs so much to record is that not only does a studio need to buy its gear, but it needs professional technicians, support etc...

i DL music all the freakin time. i think i have bought only 2 Cd's in my life and im 21. those 2 CD's were NO Doubt - tragic kingdom and No Doubt - No Doubt. the only reason i bought those CD's were because i liked every song that was on the albums. i dont feel i should have to pay $20 for a CD with 1 song im going to listen too and like 12 others ill barely be able to tolerate. Also another + to downloading songs is its easier to find some of the no name bands that will never be popular because they dont have a wide appeal. they will only appeal to a select group of people.

if it werent for downloading alot of people wouldnt have been able to hear alot of the artist they probabily like now. weather it be hamasaki ayumi, the pillows, skinny puppy, or even tsunami bomb.

any band that is good will be signed eventually. by good i mean that will have a mass appeal to many people. if downloading wasnt around i wouldnt buy cd's anyway. the band would have to make one hell of an appeal to me for me to buy their CD. They only band that has down that through one song so far has been the yeah yeah yeah and after a great deal of consideration im picking up their CD tommarow

Hmm.. After reading through this thread again, could I take it back to the original topic of whether or not it's right to rip and burn CDs you've already bought and ignore the filesharing part of this equation since that seems to be causing unrest? I'm guilty of being offtopic too, so I won't be doing anything to those who were off topic as well, but this now is me pretty much saying this thread needs to get back on topic. Want to discuss filesharing? Make another thread about it and see if you can calmy discuss it.

Hmm.. I'm retracting this for anybody who followed it. I realize now that I wasn't seeing how properly this thread was evolving, save for a flame here and there. So continue on, Axman and SaiyanPride are making very compelling arguements that are starting to open my eyes to this a bit more.

Bull****, it isnt that expensive, we had a studio called All Stars here in my city.

You could record a song for about 100 euro o_O.(4 hours recording time orso)(And no it wasnt crap quality)

I'll ask my cousin boyfriend(he recorded a song there for) the precise numbers.

Interesting link.

Recording

* £249 (£211.91 ex vat) per week day - 10am to 6pm
* £299 (£254.47 ex vat) Saturday/Sunday/Bank Holiday - 10am to 6pm
* £169 (£143.83 ex vat) per half day (not weekends) - 10am to 2pm / 3pm - 7pm

taken from the link you supplied... so, as i said, its about £1500 for a full week, maybe more. but on top of that, you also have to pay for the mixing down and mastering, that is a sepperate fee.

from your link:

CD Mastering

* £20 per track (£17.02 ex vat)
* £5 per CD copy (£4.25 ex vat)
* £30 per long-burn Master Hi-Res CD for mass duplication (£25.53 ex vat)

theyve got some nice recording equipment in there, however id never use their instruments (except the roland td6 kit, those are actually not that bad...)

so now devion, is it really bull****?

i think it could all boil down to this simple statement,

people will not buy what they dont want to buy,

thats not entirely the point i was getting at. people who want to buy the album WILL buy it, even with the availiablity of free mp3s.

ive yet to see a single person say they bought a cd cuz they couldnt find the mp3 they wanted.

what im saying is, if someone chose to download a song and not buy the cd, more than likeley they wouldnt have bought the album anyways. so its not hurting the artist in the slightest bit. they wouldnt have got any money from the guy who chose to download it anyways.

i buy all the albums i feel are worth buying, and i do have a pretty good collection (though most of them have been rendered unplayable by years of conatsnt abuse).but i wont lie to you. if i dont care enough for the band to drop 20 bucks on em then put simply, i wont
