I don't see how ESF and ZEQ2 Lite are similar. Is it because of the 3rd person and an ability to fly?

I also dont see the similarity. Similar moves, characters and orientation maybe, but thats because of DBZ. As far as gameplay goes, ZEQ2 lite feels more like a fighting game, where ESF feels more like a 3rd person shooter.

its neither an action game its third person shooter lol!!

how do u want to know if zeq has no melee overhaul and improved melee? zeq is not even released.

zeq2 "lite" is just a sandbox game wich is runned by fans like zeth said , its a grafical improvement from the older zeq2 ,ZEQ 2 "LITE" is NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED

NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED what u guys cant understand that part so there is no need for new melee system and stuff . with this tactic zeth found way WAY more talented people he could imagine for a better improved game/project wich will have definetly a lot to offer and with those talented peoples they created a learning forum wich people can also do something for the project .

NOTE: its just a goddamn "sandbox" wich IS NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED ITS JUST A "SHOWCASE" ON WHATS COMING NEXT WICH WILL HAVE WAY BETTER IMPROVEMENTS
I've already conceded that it's not meant to be played, and no, it's not a sandbox game as killing other people is still a very particular goal in the game. Which is WHY you get attacks that blow up half the map. That and there's really not shit to explore.

A sandbox game needs an open world, like how Skyrim or GTA has it set up. ZEQ2 operates inside a very limited map. If you don't find the clarity through your nerdrage to believe that, just google it. I ain't a damn encyclopedia. It is an ACTION game and, unfortunately, the creators themselves don't really get the right to label it, anymore. There's pretty clear cut descriptions on these genre's, now that video games have become such a huge social staple.

And also, I'm fairly certain he would release it for the public to tamper with very specifically because there was not gonna be a "next generation" of the game. You may be setting yourself up for disappointment.

And to everyone else, they're not exactly the same, but it really wouldn't take much to make them pretty much the same game. They're both free-roaming action games, both use similar mechanics for the attacks and techniques, I don't personally like "zanzoken", as it's somewhat limiting but it's still similar to teleport. The combat has a little bit more of a "back and forth" approach, but the basic mechanics of flying at enemy and punching is still present.

Yeah, I believe pretty strongly that they are pretty similar after playing for a bit. ESF just has more spit shine on the combat mechanics.

The thread should probably be moved out of video gaming since this is clearly not a game.

Clearly.

with the map part ur a bit wrong the map can be inifite big thanks to netradiant because gtk and netradiant allows custom build wich u can scale everything in any direction by 99999x

there are some maps already wich are bigger then gta san andreas map (baldwins infite test map ) as example u need nearly 1 hours to reach the other end

and about the combat system its simple quake 3 doesnt have such features neither it does allow it to change properly thats why zeq2 is changing engine

@Deathshot

dont lie now i check if you ever got banned in the zeq2 lite forums and u never where banned ZZzzZZzZzz

To be fair, I can see what he is attempting to say, similar to comparing ESF to the Tenkaichi or Raging Blast series of games. They are DBZ, you shoot massive beams and play from a 3rd person perspective, yes.. but past that, they aim for two very different experiences. Though, to be honest.. I couldn't tell if helv's reply and your own were earnest, or sarcastic.

That being said, this whole debate was over and done with a long time ago, and I'm honestly shocked the topic hasn't been closed.

Actually in terms of modability. Quake 3 with its open source engine code is far more modable than anything Valve can dish out.
So are you disagreeing with me or him

I hate to say it, because I'm only getting started with the comparisons and this dudes extreme misunderstanding of what a sandbox engine is, but we should probably just stop posting here. This'll be my last, as a show of faith.

With him. The sheer amount you can do with open quake because you have engine access toaly nullifies the "Quake3 has no decent melee or melee modification" point

I really only had one problem with it and that being the ripping. Hell you are even promoting it by stickying the ripped models. The community is horrible to me. I had been quite active for a while till I got banned for calling someone out on their ripped models. Not once did I flame or anything. After that I seen the community for what it was.
I don't recall any ripped content being directly or indirectly promoted. Can you please specify some of these links? Most commercial content is usually spotted rather quickly and generally discouraged for any kind of usage beyond personal study. Yes, the community is filled with an overly-hyper young audience (most of which don't speak English natively), but therein does lie a large degree of untapped passion and enthusiasm. Also, there are only two individuals who have forum powers to ban (and I'm one of them). There are VERY strict no ban policies for both the forums and IRC. Unless you were accidentally caught up in a sweep of bots or made some continued infractions over the course of months (which we remember each case of), there would never be a permanent ban.

If your username is "Deathshot", I see no bans ever issued. The only posts you made were actually positive, informative, and in the spirit of the community's purpose. The only thread relating to you and reused content was here, but I was actually defending you in that case. There are a couple other threads with you asking technical questions, but those were pretty politely answered as well.

I've already conceded that it's not meant to be played, and no, it's not a sandbox game as killing other people is still a very particular goal in the game. Which is WHY you get attacks that blow up half the map. That and there's really not shit to explore.
Killing people isn't the goal. That's a goal that's often assumed, but it's not an established mode of play. There's no scoring system, concept of frags, or anything of the like supporting killing one another being an objective. As I explained before, there are a lot of individuals that just use the setup to record and/or re-enact DBZ role-playing sessions.

Actually, being a sandbox arrangement and having an open world are NOT ALWAYS SYNONYMOUS nor are the genre labels you define as being "clear cut". Additionally, labeling something as an action game is about as broad as you can possibly get. Having complex melee combat doesn't make you a fighter game. Having a crosshair doesn't make you a shooter. Levels, experience, and equipment doesn't define you absolutely as an RPG. What you are doing here is taking common qualities of each archetype and assuming that the individual elements define the whole.

Slap on an industry generalization all you want, but commonly shared components don't define what a game is. Establishing your genre is about determining how the player interacts with the world, what kinds of goals/objectives exist, and how progression / session scope are presented.

and about the combat system its simple quake 3 doesnt have such features neither it does allow it to change properly thats why zeq2 is changing engine
Grega is correct on this point. While it's not always easy to work Quake 3 (spread-out design nightmare with bits of assembly / vm code to dip into), there are technically more exposed features to work with. This level of exposure is a dual-edged sword, however. The expansiveness of the scope of makes core engine/system changes (such as extending/swapping the mesh format) much more involved than simply rewriting a system on top yourself. ZEQ2 changed engines in 2007 primarily because of the convoluted nature of extending Quake 3 and the need to expand into more practical/controlled environments. The 2012 framework switch occurred when several contributors from ZEQ2-lite had an interest to rekindle the focused ideals of the former project. Since the in-house engine (Zios) remained in a stagnate state due to lack of an active group of developers to finish the optimizations necessary, an alternative candidate had to be chosen.

That was actually a model that was made for my addon a long long time ago. I had rights to use it.

Literally any model that comes from Nemix is ripped.

Those at the bottom were the BFP models that were released for open use as well. The owner never even stated his name other than being known as Anonymous User.

And I had my posting privileges revoked and wasn't allowed to post or anything due to calling Nemix out on things. And I know it was Nemix because he literally posted the same models here.

Nemix is only known for taking models and ripping/editing them and not even giving credit to the original creator of the model. Which is a big no no here.
He even recently ban evaded and then posted a model edit. Let alone it being his style we instantly knew it was him.

While I don't think we should veer this thread into what morally/legally constitutes "ripped" content, I will say that usage of any commercial content on the forums is typically swiftly identified, removed, and served with explanations helping the user better their development habits.

As far as I'm seeing, there are no outstanding bans for your user name (nor have their ever been any). Unless you were caught up in a wildcard sweep of bot IP bans, you should be able to post just fine. Every user that's banned always receives multiple guideline violations through PM/registered email and typically goes through a long-winded personal discussion with one of the moderators to sort things out. If none of this occurred with you, your case seems to be a technical error. Please contact any operator in IRC and it'll be sorted out.

If we're just talking inter-mod based, ECX used a Goku model from an early ZEQ2 incarnation -- with wasn't really a big fuss either way. As far as SV's models go, any of his circulating models are open game given core personal involvement/history with ZEQ2 and the duality of many of his releases. The whole topic of "ripping" beyond a legally-applicable commercial sense is more about the netiquette factor. While addon creators are certainly encouraged on the ZEQ2-lite forum to cite the sources for any shared components, it's not strictly a requirement given [a] the diversity of the pool of assets that's utilized and the terms of forward-extending principles of re-usability and chain collaboration that drives the project (as well as most of the progressive internet world today).

Honestly, both the topics of "defining qualities of a game" as well as "cross-project porting morals" should be reserved for a more verbose debate in unique threads -- which I'm willing to participate in if created.
