If you were referring to my post, that's the 2nd quest in the main storyline. You go into Oblivion to close the Oblivion gate so that Kvatch can be retaken. No Daedra Lords slain, so I would assume the fight is not yet over.

I'm not sure about NPC companions, but when you get missions to have people follow you, you can just let them follow you around and fight for you. It's true; I read it on the internet.

eventually oblivion gates start appearing like in the countryside and stuff, i've got 2 non kvatch gates that i've seen now.

on another note has anyone else been bitten by a vampire while they slipped and turned? the quest to undo it was very long and annoying, of course the hardest part for me was finding the freaking garlic, not the ancient vampire ash, or the oblivion plants, the GARLIC. Anyway if you get turned into a vampire have some fun the nifty powers you get, but i got tired of it eventually.

Yeah, Oblivion gates appear all over the damn place. I literally can't go ten minutes without seeing one when I'm running around exploring. You can get some good loot from them though, so it's often worth venturing in to close them.

Ive got garlic. In fact, quite a bit. Would you like some? Im not sure why you bothered with all that... I simply concocted a Potion of Cure Disease. Bye bye, Mr. Porphyric Hemophilia! Or are you talking about full-blown can't-go-in-sunlight didn't-notice-you're-sick-and-went-3-days-without-a-cure Vampirism?

Say, they wouldn't happen to have any Vampire quests in Oblivion, would they? I remember something about different castes of Vampires in Morrowind, although I never explored that branch or the storyline. The extra abilities would be quite useful in my life of killing for the Night Mother.

Furthermore, does anybody know if Necromancy is pursuable? Ive killed Necromancers, and one of the Mage guild leaders with black soulstones. For those not in the know, black soulstones capture human souls upon death, whereas normal soulstones can only capture the souls of beasts. I read in a book a warning about putting the wrong size soul in the wrong size stone. Something about your soul leaking into it...

...this game is awesome.

Now,
I can buy this however I want a few questions answered about the game (cant seem to find a demo).
Will this run on my system?
1.8 Ghz,
1024MB RAM,
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro-128 (MSI RX9800 TDI-Pro).

Will I still be playing it 6 months from now?
The last game I bought was Half-Life 2 but that's gathering dust on the shelve and is uninstalled and dont really plan to install again (Valve relied too much on the modding community).
Will there be mods for it, or will it able to be modified?
Is it really worth 60 dollers.
Can you go online?

It is single player only, so no online play. It is easily moddable, in fact, there are about 50 mini-mods that have been released allready within the first week XD

Your computer should be able to run it, but most peoples computers that exceede the reccomended specs, can barely play it. I would wait a couple weeks until they release a performance patch before you get it.

It has awesome gameplay, combat system rocks, and has nearly infinite replay value. So much to do, so little time!

The voice acting is good, and it is really immersive. But unfortunatally, you might be one of the unlucky ones that can't run it, even though you should be able to. Then again, you might get lucky and have it run flawlessly. Very unpredictable this game is.

That's quite the expectation to have of any game.

As for performance, your CPU doesn't measure up. It lists 2 GHz as the minimum. RAM and GPU look okay though. I have a 2.4 GHz P4, 1.5 GB RAM, 9800 Pro and it runs okay... definitely better than "barely running it", and I don't meet the recommended settings. It stutters in cluttered areas sometimes and the face textures aren't that great (face texture should be a seperate option), especially when you're zoomed in talking to people. My bet is that people complaining of performance problems are running with their settings too high or, for anybody that would beg to differ, are having some inexplicable software incompatabitiy causing in-game slow-downs.

Just check it out before you buy it just to be sure it will run, but be damn sure to buy it if you plan on playing it.

Funny thing is, my 1.6ghz runs the game better than my 2.2ghz. They both have the smae vid card, so why the slower cpu would run it better is beyond me. I stay with my prvious statement, you might get lucky.

i was actually bitten in the night while i slept and instantly turned into a full blown vampire. i THINK its because i raided a vampire tomb northwest of anvil, but i might have done something else to catch their attention, or it might have been completely random, who knows.

As for the cure(for full blown vampirism) go to the magical academy in the imperial city and talk to the 2 people in the main room one of them should set you on the path to redemption.

For people that its running slow for and you have good enough specs you can try a few things(i know most of you probably already do this but...).

1. get ad aware/spy sweeper and kill all those nasty programs
2. defrag your hard drive(start->all programs->accesories->system tools)
3. stop all those programs running in the background, you don't need aim, msn etc... running while your playing morrowind do you? if you don't need to be on the internet turn that off and turn off your protection programs

those are just a few things i find that makes everything run faster.

edit: if you've never defragged your hard drive do it over night, i had a computer that i hadn't defragged in like 3 years, it took like 3-4 days to defrag it

I know some more tweaks that might help some people:

Hey guys, not sure if you all are aware of this, but it was posted on the official forums (i take no credit for it's discovery).

Pretty much everyone can relate to having their worst performance outdoors in the thick grass. Worst still, the thick grass means you can't even see where that wolf is that's attacking you. The simple solution would be to turn off grass, resulting in a HUGE performance increase (more so than turning off HDR), however, there is a much better solution.

By default Oblivion's grass is very thick. This means lots of sprites to render, and your graphics card struggling under the toll. However, this can be changed.

Go to your Oblivion game folder, then open the doc "OBlivion_default" in that directory.

Search for [Grass], to get to this section:

[Grass]
iMinGrassSize=80
fGrassEndDistance=3000.0000
fGrassStartFadeDistance=2000.0000
bGrassPointLighting=0
bDrawShaderGrass=1
iGrassDensityEvalSize=2
iMaxGrassTypesPerTexure=2
fWaveOffsetRange=1.7500

Ok, so by default, the iMinGrassSize (ie, the density of grass) is 80. The smaller this value, the MORE dense the grass is. What i recommend is increasing this to 120-200. You can now afford to make the Grass Fade and End distances obscenely high, like 5000.0000 and 10000.000 respectively, without taking a performance hit.

I set iMingrassSize=140, and i immediately noticed a great performance increase. Try it out, and do a bit of experimenting.
And it is said that www.tweakguides.com will come with an Oblivion tweakguide soon as well, so you might wanna check it.

Gonna pick it up tomorrow, this damn well better be the best $80 I have ever spent.

BUT!

I know that you need to make an effort to become addicted to Oblivion. Like, I wasn't addicted to Morrowind before. Until I joined the Mage / Theif Guild.

In Oblivion however, are the quests realistic? One quest in Morrowind had you traveling over 50km just to fetch items. And it was one of the first quests.

AND! Is archery good in Oblivion? Morrowind + Archery sucked due to the dice system. But since this uses the Havoc engine, I'm wondering, could you like, knock the weapon out of someone's hand, or drop him to the floor by shooting his knee?

Sicron, thank you. I've been noticing that the grass was too thick. I can't wait to try this out tonight.

You scared me there, but I forgot about the exchange rates! Unfortunately, the archery system doesn't work like that. But it is better now, if you can hit them with the arrow you'll do damage.

Havok has nothing to do with damage-specific points on the body. I haven't tried out Archery, but if you enchant a bow with disintegrate weapon, I'm sure you could dispose of the guy's weapon. There's other stuff you can do.. at higher levels of Marksmanship, your arrows have a chance to knock people back, possibly paralyze, and you can zoom in/sneak for ambush damage.
