Agree, especially seeing as how the name Revolution has been around for seemingly forever. It's going to take Nintendo considerable effort to push the Rev as the Wii now.

Wii.. it still does not compute. o_O

If only that was true, President George W. Bush wouldn't come up as google's #1 result for "failure." :p

Um, you're confusing Japanese and other Asian languages. The Japanese have no characters for "L" or for "V." They substitute them with "R" and "B," respectively.

Also, no character ends with a consonant except for N, so Revolution would be..

Revolution="Reborushiyon."
Actually, the correct translations in japanese for "revolution" would be:

a revolution = isshuu
axis of revolution = kaitenjiku
counterrevolution = handoukakumei, hankakumei
green revolution = guri-nreborixyu-shon
information revolution = infome-shonreborixyu-shon
one revolution = ichikaiten, ikkaiten
revolution = kakumei, senkai, unkou, tenkai, kaiki, kaisen
revolution (of heavens) = kouten

Just depends on the context...
But I don't understand it, Revolution sounds revolutionary, cool, something...totally new. And then they come up with Wii...what was wrong with Revolution?

Alea mentioned the Romaji interpretation of Revolution, the way the Japanese pronounce it, not a direct translation of the word. :3

Actually, the most common word for 'revolution' in Japanese would be "henkaku," but as Shiyojin said, I was showing how the Japanese would pronounce the English word "Revolution."

They would say "Reborushiyon," not "Levoruutionuh" as Raven had said.

Hash has a point in that Wii might just sink in. I remember how they had Project Dolphin and man that was retarded. So I called it the game cube from then on and everyone forgot it's previous name (for the best of course)

But seriously; this time around I'm going to continue calling it "The Revolution" I don't care what it's called, I'm not calling it "Wii". It's just not happening.

Erm, yes I read your post, and this post. And they say the exact same thing. You single out American's as if that's the only thing every single American care's about. Even though only one person said it.
And once again you get it wrong. I'm obviously not talking about EVERY american, that would be retarded....seriously. It's a general view the gaming crowd in america follows, I see it everyday. You look at the japanese sales charts and you (for the most parts) see games that are fun to play. You look at the american charts and it's maddens and wrestling and stupid stuff like that. I never said you as a person only care about graphics, just american's in general care about them more then gameplay. Don't believe me, try working at a game retailer for any number of months. I mean everyday I have to stop someone from picking up a copy of Bad Boys Miami Takedown for Playstation 2 or Xbox....which is pretty sad considering how poor the title is. But oh well, your entitled to your opinion :p.

So... would it be cool if we called it 'the console formally known as revolution'?

Uh....yeah, you're wrong. Madden and games like that are in the top 10 because people like playing with their friends and people like sports. Same goes for wrestling.

You having to tell people not to buy Bad Boys should be enough to show you that graphics aren't everything. That game looks like crap.

After roughly 10 hours for it to soak in.... it's still pretty ridiculous. But not so much as 10 hours ago... Oh well.

Most people I told about it found it silly, too...

After joking about it with my friends, I think I'm actually starting to like the name.

To be honest, Americans , in general, don't care for gameplay. I'm American and I love graphics and I love gameplay. But the damn majority of Americans enjoy Graphics and power rather than simplicity and fun.
Plain and simple.

Nintendo claims that it will bring the player more in touch with the game and themselves...Now, if this 100%, the name will be nothing, but if that is the description of moving a controller with your hand, then I am going to be disappointed.

The again, there is that "secret". Maybe it's not a bluff.

In the end, the name doesn't really matter, does it? However, it does go to show that Nintendo thoughtlessly neglected to perform even a single market research poll to see how people reacted to the name.

Judging by the polls at GameFAQs and GameSpot,

29,295 "It sucks" vs. 1,970 "I like it!" votes for Gamespot, and
36,440 "It sucks," vs. 14,833 "It's okay, or I like it" for GameFAQs. (Note that GameFAQs is notoriously pro-Nintendo, and this is still a landslide loss for Nintendo--only 4689/51273 said they favored the name.)

In any case, it's Nintendo's machine, and it's their decision to implement pretentious and annoying marketing plans at their discretion. It (shouldn't) affect the games we'll see, besides developers possibly altering their choices for games.

Maybe the big secret is that they are changing the name back to Revolution.
One can hope....

That would be classic. If they do change the name again (especially back to Revolution), Nintendo has balls.

So, their angle is that the word 'Wii', which I'm sure people end up pronouncing "Why" is going to bring players more in touch with their gaming system?

Haha, why didn't they call it the Nintendo Laid and their promotion could be, "Now even video game nerds can get laid!"

Brutal.

Ah ha! Opti, that's horrible :p

I think most people are still in shock right now. Eventually people will get over it. I mean, the people were already pro-microsoft/sony and either disliked Nintendo before, or were merely a hair away from dumping a 2nd console money sink (like Pride.) Think after a little bit of contemplation time and some E3 footage, people will go back to it thinking "what's in a name?"

... Granted, Pride is more likely to wee all over the Wii before even considering buying it.
