Not really. He claims Nintendo fanboys are immature children, while in almost every gaming related thread I've been in, HE'S the one taking weak stabs at Nintendo.

Anyway. I'm kind of surprised they didn't wait for E3 to reveal the new name, considering E3 is so close. It would've at least made for an interesting announcement. :p I'm very curious to see what other surprises they have in store for us, especially that 'final secret' the Rev. is supposed to have.

You can criticize me all you want--just make sure to acknowledge the facts and I won't mind. But to say I care about my image as a gamer more than the games is stupid. I don't care that it is named a dumb name, I don't care what color it is, I don't care about any of that...I care that THEY DON'T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT ME, OR ANYTHING I THINK IS COOL OR INTERESTING, EVER, AND JUST CARE ABOUT EXTRACTING MORE EASY MONEY FROM IGNORANT PEOPLE.

You want to be part of that, fine. Not me.
Can you say EMO ?...

Seriously, when has a game sytem or game been made revolving around the opinion of 1 person ? NEVER. These companies always tend to make the majority of the people happy, not you.

Or at least they think it makes us happy. :p

I'm personally not a big fan of the new name, but who knows? Maybe in a year it's what everyone'll call the thing.

I kind've preferred the Nintendo Go, though. It had a nice ring to it, and it actually made kind've sense.

Maybe they really WERE going to use the name Go, but after it was leaked, they said "Okay, let's think up another name quickly so people won't think Go was the actual name, and make us look stupid for leaking it." :p

The thread is for discussion of the new name, not the console itself.

"While the code-name 'Revolution' expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates game players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games...and each other."
That makes as much sense as an asbestos sandwich. A console's name serves two purposes; to describe the console and to sound cool while doing it. Wii does neither. It won't seperate gamers from 'regular people', they'll just think we're even more strange for owning a console called 'Wii'. I'm not even going to touch upon that last part of the statement, it just seems like they pulled random words of inspiration from a hat and used them regardless of what they actually mean.

It's just a name. I don't really care what's it called.
They're not like "Oh we gave it a stupid name, let's screw all the good stuff we had for something named Revolution and make something crappy".
It will still be the same console the Revolution would be (crappy or not).

I read on a vg-newsblog that they didn't call it 'Revolution' because the word is too hard to say in Japanese =P "Levoruutionuh".

I just want them to do something ****ing right for once. Something that will actually appeal to me. That doesn't mean a badass name, no more than it means you need UT and Metal Gear on the thing. But ****, man--we haven't had a normal Mario game in ten years. We haven't had a 'real' Metroid sequel either, since Super Metroid. And don't even get me started on the Zelda games.

Those things are what I want. You all may be satisfied with the bootleg stuff, but I want my super nintendo glory days to return, and the company just doesn't want that to happen. It's the same thing since the dawn of the console war: they just want to bull**** their way into carving a niche market to survive another year. If you like Metroid Prime and Mario Sunshine, I'm not knocking you. But what I want, is Super Metroid II, and Super Mario World 3. Things like that.

This Wii thing is just the last nail in the coffin for me. I keep hoping they will somehow start giving a **** and they just plain won't. I mean would it have killed them to at least do a survey and see what people thought of this? Most people I know don't even believe me, it's so stupid.

There are only two types of responses to this thread: "Wow what a stupid name" and "Well it's a pretty stupid name but I'll live with it." I don't think anyone here actually wants to call it "The Nintendo Wii."

I'm sorry man, I can't even talk about this anymore, it's too disgusting.

Yeah...but then you have negative publicity and positive...so far, most people are pretty negative about it. I for one don't really think this name is...wiicked or something. ;/ Sure...it's just a name, but a name is what makes or breaks something...

For God's Sake!

From the responses that have been turning up you'd think PS3 was some kind of perfect haiku. That XBox wasn't the most shameless case of "It's a box.. and X is trendy."

PS3. XBox 360. Wii

They're names for God's sake. Titles! No one's winning any prizes for imagination here. Sure it sounds daft but, for all that's good and pure, it's a name!

Some of you guys - those attacking and those defending, as though Nintendo were the last fortress of Good left in existence - need some perspective.

And possibly a hanky. o_O

My £1.50..

. . .

And, for the record, I'll be buying a Nintendo: Wii.

So there. :D

Yeah your soooo right Saiyan....I mean it's named Wii for christs sake, why worry about playing it, or seeing what the games are like the name matters more!! Not to mention the idea of a baby blue one, I mean yeah if they release that I can finally get one to match my diaper as well...since I mean I would HAVE to own one if I'm playing a baby blue wii.

Sometimes I just wish Americans would acctually care about the quality of the games rather then the graphics or how it will effect their "image" as a gamer =\.

Oh and a little food for thought, the most powerful system has never won the consol race, at least not yet...so it will be intresting to see if all that extra juice the PS3 is pumping will really be worth it against the 360 and wii.
Careful there- one person, one person so far as said "The console will suck due to it's name" and you automatically say "Americans" implying every american thinks it sucks due to the name. I'm getting the Revolution. I know I am. Does that make me a fanboy? Maybe, but then I guess you can also call me a PS3 fanboy because I'll be getting that as well.

I just find the name funny and can be taken the wrong way. I'm not going to stop calling it the Revolution. It's a better name. Does it have to be revolutionary to be called that? Of course not, but that's what it was code named and that's what I'm going to call it.

@ Pride; if you want your old Nintendo days to come back, than you best go out searching for a nintendo or snes and get the games you once learned to love so much, or get the Revolution and download those games for a price as low as $.99 (roughly)

Does the name have everything to do with a console? YES! Yes it does. If PSone decided to name it "Don't buy this: It's ****" Then no one would consider buying it. They wouldn't make sales. The name has to intrest a buyer. "Hmm PlayStation, I wonder..." "Hmm Wii, wtf..." Big difference.

I first learned of the PlayStation I was intrigued. I wanted to learn about it, because I thought of something I could use to play video games. Then there was Nintendo Entertainment System. Not original but it made me curious to check it out. Now Wii? Ye-no. I think of a penis pissing everytime someone says it.

It's not a Nintendo: Wii, it's just Wii. I thought the Xbox was stupid because it relied on the 'X sounds cool' principle, but Wii is so much worse. Who names a console after the slang word for urine?

I hope the community will speak up at Nintendo and tell them to change it back to Revolution.

Honesty, except for Soul Punisher, I haven't heard ANYONE say anything remotely positive about the new name.

At least Revolution sounded a bit more mature. Nintendo was going on about how well the Rev would play FPS games, to rid itself somewhat of the kiddy image. And now they call the Rev the Wii.

Read my post again, I said I wish American's would care about gameplay rather then graphics and looking cool. Don't believe me, I see it everyday at work (gamestop), people come in looking for a PSP and PSP stuff. When I ask them what they think of the DS, it's oh that looks horrible, the machine looks retarted, the graphics suck. No one ever rags on the games, because if they PLAYED them, they would have a lot of fun :p.

Oh and Saiyan, the New Super Mario Bros. is due out in a little more then two weeks, and what about Metroid Fusion and the ever rumored Metroid Dread???

All in all the name "Wii" sucks, but I'll still be getting one for the games ;).

Erm, yes I read your post, and this post. And they say the exact same thing. You single out American's as if that's the only thing every single American care's about. Even though only one person said it.

I'm American and I don't care about graphics. Which is why I still own a NES a SNES a Sega a N64 and a GCN. If I wanted graphics I'd have a better computer.

^_^" I actually take back what i said. You see, i really didn't understand why people were making fun of it up until now. I just found out, that all this time i was pronouncing the name Nintendo " Wii " as in " Why " instead of " We " -- now that is pretty stupid.....stupid of me as well to catch on so late.

If only that was true, President George W. Bush wouldn't come up as google's #1 result for "failure." :p

Um, you're confusing Japanese and other Asian languages. The Japanese have no characters for "L" or for "V." They substitute them with "R" and "B," respectively.

Also, no character ends with a consonant except for N, so Revolution would be..

Revolution="Reborushiyon."

I'm just hoping that for two things. First, after a bit of time passes, and the name sinks in, it doesn't sound as stupid anymore. That's pretty much a given, since most console names sound pretty stupid (not as stupid as this though), but they all become normal after. Secondly, Nintendo doesn't just sit around like they always do and actually advertise the thing. Stupid name or not, the whole thing has a lot of marketing potential. With the Is that look like people, the "Wii can do it together" stuff, if Nintendo pushes hard on advertising, then they could actually come up with some really good commercials and stuff. And that would really help Wii become a normal, commonplace name.

So ya, i'm sure the "With time the name won't sound as bad" thing will happen, but who knows about the marketing plan, but Nintendo will really have to push it in my eyes to make Wii look cool.
