I used Photoshop for my sig. I did a number of things to make my background.

I will not give all of it away but I did alot of Chrome effect and liquify with some "Selective Colour" editing.

I suggest you just mess around in photoshop for an hour. Not trying to make sigs but finding a style you like.
You know make different backgrounds and stuff

Like naz said, be more creative .... Try out the different tools and it's abilities ....

If you're just going to leave it as clean and simple as that, why don't you cut down the size of it so there's not so much empty space?
