Gir, your "point" really goes both ways. People are more likely to go "AWWW!" when they here about how many chicklets are thrown into McDonald's meat shredders every day than the amount of people killed by famine/disease/war each day.

People often care about animals to the point of stupidity. Look at the movie Independance Day: the dog is running away from the explosion and narrowly escapes. The crowd breathes a sigh of relief. Forget the thousands of people who just died, the friggin' dog got away, it's all good!!!

If you want to devalue human life because we're a drain on mother Earth, that's fine and normal... if you're a friggin' plant. As humans we relate more to other humans; we're able to understand that every person killed in this disaster capable of thinking (there were plenty of babies), had dreams and ambitions and passions, just like you and me, had people they cared for and that cared for them. It is our species and we understand it best. If you want to tow in every dead cow and squirrel or whatever, and give them all graves, go ahead. Thing is, we can't find a dead squirrel and then contact it's parents and tell them how their poor squirrely died and give it a nice burial. Hell, we can't even give -our- people nice burials, masses of unidentified bodies are being burned in pyres or shoved in shallow graves.

Pretend you had a best friend who had a dog, and you knew them both very well. Would you be more stricken if the dog died instead of your friend? Because your friend is such a terrible polluter since he drives and has a refridgerator and all that crap?

This isn't even about how great we are or how terrible we are as a species. As a species it's simply common that we care about other members of it. If you find that weird or disagree with it or something... well too bad. You can dig for graves for all the cats that must've been killed.

I organised a non-uniform day in my workplace for charity, so we can raise some money for the emergency relief - plus we are trying to get donations from our customers too.

I suggest other people try and do this too :)

I know this must be terrible for those who were near that tsunami for all the reasons you've all written. But I have a feeling that this will be forgotten sonner than we think. I'm not saying it's a good thing, but where I live people don't even talk about September 11th.

Gir, I don't really think many people will agree with you. What human would agree to kill himself? I've never seen or heard of any man (or woman) who killed himself (or herself) for no reason.
Although imo, the thing that seperates us from other species (besides IQ and stuff) is that a human may choose to risk his life to help other humans and even animals.
Face it. We are the only beings who can survive nature. By the end of the Earth, humans will be living on another planet, and while 'bugs' might survive a nature disaster, animals will perish.

I don't think you truly grasp the magnitude of this disaster, September the 11th isn't a drop in the bucket by comparison. Not only will the numbers rise over 100,000 (if they haven't already) that number will probably double in the coming year through the famine and disease that will consume the countries that were hit. These aren't all well-developed countries, they don't have the resources to fix things before all hell breaks loose.

So what you're saying is that forgetting about it is ok?
Besides it wasn't nature it was a bad example.
Edit: btw what is that disease?

I think Orbit's talking about what I said to his idea that not many people thought about September the 11th.

Anyway I think you misunderstood me, Orbit. I didn't say that it was okay to forget 9/11, I merely pointed out that this event is beyond the kind of suffering 9/11 involved. And as for the diseases try TB or Typhoid, these travel at an insane rate through water. Don't forget that the Tsunami flooded the sewers, bring tons of filth and human waste to the surface.

Things are going to get a hell of a lot worse before they get better

like i said... all everyone is concerned with is human deaths, and being glad that they werent there.... pretty selfish if you ask me.

yes its a tragedy, and yes its horrible. but it happened for a reason, and humans werent the only people who died. im sure there were countless animals and species of plant that are now either suffering in losses or are extinct...

but hay lets all worry about humans cos eveyone knows were the most important thing on earth :S

i feel the same way man, its like only humans have feelings, and animals dont....blah what can you do, humans are humans, arent we :)

Oh geez.

If you want to try and play God and judge that a rare species of flower is more important than a child or something, you can go ahead and try to kill the human race since we're so damn detrimental to the environment. It'd make for a good Bond movie.

As we are -humans- it's normal to sympathize/empathize/pity/aid other -humans- when a calamity like this occurs. Not to mention we have an instinct called "self-preservation." Any educated person knows they're a drain on the environment, you included. So why don't you kill yourself? You selfish, selfish jerk you, the world would be better off without humans so why don't you just jump off a bridge and feed the fish eh? It'd be much better for the world than using that computer you're on right now.

Maybe you think you're coming off as some informed devil's advocate, but really, you're just sounding like hypocritical ***holes. If you want to point your finger down at us for caring about others and putting people above plants and wildlife, then why don't you go practice what you preach.

Hippies.

actually i do practice what i preach, i actively work, study, and grow some species of plant, and im always learning more about nature and how we affect it.

my point wasnt to tell you you all suck for what your doing, im just saying that in the scale of things, past and future, this is just an every day occurance and we should just get on with it. like i said, yeh, its sad, and yeh it sucks, and i sure do feel bad about it, but not JUST for humans.

That's what I meant.

I really doubt that you actually care about the animals as much as you care about humans, Gir. Seriously I don't think that's possible.

Did you just say this big ass tsunami was an everyday occurance? You need to stop paying attention to those damn tree huggers and get a grip on reality. 100,000 people dying all at once is a big ****ing deal.

Oh fine. This tsunami cant be compared to world war 1 or 2. My bad. This tsunami business is just a joke -_-. Im also guessing you would like to me to talk about how you grow plants. Thats great man. Plants take what? A year to grow? Screw the plants. They grow back in no time. Give um some water and miracle grow and BAM! They're back.
