HOWing, what's your take?

The only thing I fail to grasp is why people insist that "HOWers" are -exploiting-.. An exploit is game mechanics manipulation, creating an unfair advantage by abusing something not originally intended by the creators.

Team ESF intentionally implemented the system where the person with more ki wins head-ons. So, how exactly, by ensuring you have more ki, are you 'abusing' or 'exploiting' rather then just 'using'?

Just because someone uses the same thing over and over doesn't mean they are 'abusing' a system..

Does a newb who uses Kamehameha repeatedly "abuse the beam system?"

It's not abuse/exploitation, it's just a way to play, whether it's cheap or not, it's incorrect to call it "ki system abuse."..

Has anyone every try using an Ki attack against such players?..they are just standing there wait for you to attack correct? There is another aspect to this game other than melee damn it.

This isnt Street Fighter.

for one thing I'll ahve to half-agree with you,since the average player will just teleport past the beam,but there's the right-click button :/

HOWing was and never will be a skill,people believe they get better because the HOW.Nothing will change what they think,just them as they are,they'll be ruining themselves in 1.2 (I hope)

But for us high-pingers,HOWing is unavoidable,due to the packet delay between the client and server,the main reason I don't play online unless someone sets up a Hong Kong server or anywhere near HK :/

SailorAlea, I love your counter-arguements(rebuttals). I also agree with everything you've said so far. Doesnt it take skill to HOW? Everything TAKES a certain skill whether its great or in small amounts. Is it your opponents fault if he doesnt need style to beat you? THats basically what it is. People who try to be stylish with doing all these fancy crap to win are just pissed that people goes for simpler things to win. Its all about style if you ask me.

if you get pwned so badly by a HOw'er you are skillless. its not the players fault you dont avoid his attempt at being cheap. in a sence, howing only works if both parties commit to going headon. thus, if you get how'd its your own damn fault. it doesnt matter how good the hower is. as of late, i have never been defeated by a hower. u ppl all talk like howers are running rampant and owning servers. this is not true, ive never seen a hower have a frag count greater than his deaths.

Really, I think you should play ESF somewhat more. The "vision" you have with "HOWing" is that the opponent stands still, without movement, just charging and waiting for you to come. Well let me tell you, that isn't it.

Also, who brought up the term fancy? Is it wrong to play with self-forged up skills? Instead of going for pathetic headon hits? It's upto you how to play, noone commands you. If you don't want to put any skill in ESF, and just play it to win, go for the HOW tactic. You'll learn how do it properly within 5 minutes and thus, you're "good" because you can beat people with headons, cheers.

However, if you plan to play this game with valor, go for a little bit more advanced. You might want to learn side-hits, back-hits, combos and sharp turnings. I'm not saying that these people never do headons, it's just that they don't intend to use it that often.

If you like to HOW around. By all means, go for it. If you'd like to see more of the game, then don't. Go for a little bit of action and melee fights and get it more exciting, instead of going headon.

And what's this about being pwned by HOWers? I know I don't get pwned by them, ever. It's just sad to see someone who can only do that. It's just my point of view, I consider them the same as people spamming beams (beamnoobs). Back it up all you want, you can specialize, perfectionize it to the max. However you put it, it's still sad and skill-less, that's all.

Ki attacks work very well against HOW people, except for the fact that while you're charging that beam they can attack, or get by the beam and attack you. Also, using a beam instantly makes you a beam whore, and even worse than that HOW.
According to what I've heard from many clanners, ESF should be a street fighter clone, although I agree, ki is the way to go.

1.) It is exploiting because the system was not intended to be used in such a manor. Ask its creator, PCJoe. It's like using a hunting rifle to kill your friend. Sure, you can do it, but it wasn't designed for that. You're exploiting the design by introducing your own application for it. The guy who designed the gun didn't want you to run around killing human beings with it, and just because you can do it doesn't mean you shouldn't.

2.) This thread is just full of people who like to call each other names because it makes them feel better. All of this bull**** about "If you HOW, you just suck, admit you suck" and "HOWers are so lame" you guys should hear yourselves. Way to draw a stereotype out of proportion. So what happens next? A bunch of new people come into the forums and learn a new word to call each other and the idiots don't understand the context of it so they start using it in public rooms starting flame wars. This happens to lots of us lots of the time, and it's because of crap like this. People just need to ACCEPT that it is a part of the game, whether they like it or not, and discussing it to oblivion is not going to make it go away.

I never said i had trouble with them.. You assumed that i did, and you know what happens if you assume. I rarely get beaten by howers, but at that point, you never have a good melee fight.

heres a thought instead of complaining about how cheap people are learn to adapt your style and counter it. every single move and skill in esf has an opposite and can be countered or stoped now if your too lazy to decide to find a way around it then stop complaining about it

I can't believe you people. This change to the melee system in 1.1 was intentional, and NOT a bug, and personally I think it was the best thing that ESF has ever implemented.

Finally, melee requires strategy. No longer are people disadvantaged by ping because
a) head to head better ping wins and
b) (and this still happens to an extent) I watch myself get hit where I was 0.3 seconds ago, which is incredibly annoying when it happens.

Strategy. Introducing ki-based melee provided a way for people to actually use their brains instead of their 5K1LLZ, as it is so often put. And hey, if you've got the skills, you can still teleport like a freak in circles and hit someone in the back of the head, more power to you. But if you're stupid enough to teleport around while your opponent stands still and watches you buzz around like an annoying gnat and waste your ki, then you really deserve to be pounded into the ground, sorry.

You know it's there.
You know how it works.
You know you shouldn't waste your ki on heaps of teleporting.
You should know better than to complain.

I agree with you that it's better than ping, but there has to be a better way than the current system. You have this big lecture telling us not to complain and not to fall victim to these players, which no one needs to hear. Your whole post is bashing on those who cant defeat them, and you're assuming that everyone that doesn't like the ki based melee system is complaining about it becuase they can't get around it. Not true, most players that spend a decent amount of time playing the game have no trouble at all with howers, it's not too hard to get around, the only thing most people complain about is that it's annoying. I'd like a good fight once in a while, and i get it, but scarcely now.
