I just don't see myself getting caught downloading a torrent, even though it's not safe.
Everyone thinks that until they're caught. I only mean good things when I say this, so I ask that you try not to take offense. Shake off that "oh, nobody can touch me" thing you have going, because you aren't untouchable. Nobody is (well, nobody that uses P2P as a means of getting what they want anyway). Not even private trackers are really private (even though I won't deny that they're significantly safer than public trackers).

If you know what you are looking for you can pretty much just type the name of it followed by rapidshare in google and you will get a list of sites with the RS links or MU links, like say "porn rapidshare"
Damn, HTTP links are an even more ancient form of piracy. Not to mention that unless you have a premium account on such sites, you're limited to downloading only a small amount of data per hour, which kinda makes you look back and wonder why you didn't go with something better like Usenet (or, sad to say, even BitTorrent x_x).

Pfft, people are still using torrents? Damn, talk about the stone age revisited. Although, I do feel slightly nostalgic when I accidentally stumble across a torrent sight when browsing for lesbian action. Mmm... lesbians...
Bittorrent <- 2001

Usenet <-1980

I got your stone age right here.

I guess you're right. Funny how it still beats BitTorrent though. I guess what's newer isn't always better, especially in this case. But by stone age, I wasn't referring to the age of the technology, but rather the state of popularity between the two technologies.

Edit: Oh, and for anybody interested, the term "spam" originated from two people within the Usenet community about 15 years ago. So like it or not, Usenet has unknowingly been part of a trend that you all follow almost daily.

Stone age stuff is popular? I mean really, the Flintstones haven't had a movie in seven years.

I live in Candada, and I have PeerGuardian. I'll take my "chances" with Bittorrent. I used to have Usenet (and I certainly didn't get Newsbin through Bittorrent. No, certainly not. Perish the thought.), but the University of Alberta doesn't have a news server. It is more secure though.

Downloading has become something of a non-issue for me because I have some craptacular bandwidth limits here. I could (theoretically) burn through a week's bandwidth in 5 hours or so, downloading at full speed.

Do as you please. It might as well be your life that you're putting on the line, but that's yours to risk, so I hope you have fun.

I'm not stupid enough to fight those things in court, unlike some people.

US users are blocked from using Torrentspy now too. Looks like it's gearing up to full scale war between dlers, dl providers, and the "artists"*. I'm guessing that we'll see the traditional media routes die as no one pays for anything anyway, as it's not missed sales, simply lack of money from the people who download. If I didn't download it, I still wouldn't buy it. I don't have $20 to throw around for a CD full of music I didn't want, or $30 to buy a movie that has plot stolen from a comic book I already read.

*The people who finance the artists and sell their stuff while paying them garbage and letting them have the right to perform it live, not the actual artists.

To be honest I don't see myself ever getting caught. But I know it might happen. And a quarter of a million $ fine is enough to ruin my life.

I think it's stupid. If you get caught stealing, you should just pay for what you stole, non of this bull****. I mean, if I downloaded a CD for $20, and get fined 1/4 of a million dollars, how does that even remotely come close to being anything justice?

They should be like "We caught you downloading blah blah blah. We have notified RIAA and if you don't send money you owe back within 7-14 days, you will be issued some court thing / fined 1/4 of a million"

I mean, seriously, anyone who has used the internet no doubt downloaded copyrighted material in their time of use, let be saving a picture off the internet that the artist did not want you to save, or one song, or a $6000 piece of software.

That's my 2c.

Oh I already found my way around this problem but thought it was interesting their blocking canadian users lol.
torrenspy blocked US like a couple months ago
"Sorry, but because you are located in the USA you cannot use the search features of the Torrentspy.com website.Torrentspy's decision to stop accepting US visitors was NOT compelled by any Court but rather an uncertain legal climate in the US regarding user privacy and an apparent tension between US and European Union privacy laws."

that was my number one torrent site, cant use it now cause of the american block. is this site just called demonoid.com?

Torrentz.com

I use this. Shows you all the different torrent sites, and their ratio's.

I doubt I'll ever get caught. I also doubt if I did get caught I'd be fined quarter of a million dollars.

I can see why the US is being blocked, but Canada? The whole fine thing is insane. Most people download music that has already been bought by enough people to permanently secure the future of the artists, unless they want to buy 100 million dollar boats and so forth (something I feel is unethical, considering a fireman probably works five times harder for a tiny little fraction of that, while someone who can sing/play the guitar, example Britney Spears, can attain over 380 000 000$).

Another thing, is if they were to prosecute every single one of the people guilty of stealing music or similar, the economy of the world would go down the drain. It's probably just to scare people from downloading, although, I fail to see how the US will prosecute people in other countries for a few mere songs.

completely disagree with your ethical speech there Avenger.

while firefighters work is brave for sure. it's really just gruntwork, nothing really imaginary there.

you try entertaining hundreds, thousands, millions of people, successfully for an extended period of time. it's REALLY friggin hard.

You're telling me it's fine for someone who wrote a bunch of crappy songs (in my opinion, not a lot of small girls' opinions') should earn a sum of 385 000 000 rather than a fire-fighter?

Just have to say Gir, even though you're in a band, which reflects your opinion on this matter, that's ridiculous. I agree creativity should be rewarded, but earning tens and hundreds of millions, and after this, suing people for thousands of dollars, for "stealing" a few songs?

Sure, the artists themselves aren't doing this, but their record-companies are! If were a successful musician, I don't think I'd care about people stealing a few songs after I earned my ten million. Actually, I'd just be happy people are listening to and enjoying my music - because that's part of music too, not just the bloody money.

That's an opinion. The artist might have written a crappy song in your eyes, but it could be seen as the best song ever to thousands of others. What a firefighter does may only last 5 seconds, and he's viewed as a hero. What a (good) song artist does is remembered for all time. Look at Jimi Hendrix for example. He's seen by the majority as (arguably) the greatest guitarist ever, and is considered a hero in the music industry.

Myees, I also said it was my opinion in my post, so why are you telling me that it's just my opinion when I already made that pretty clear? Yes, I did make a snide remark of what I thought of the artist as well, but I still stated it was just an opinion.

Also, why are we drifting off topic? XD I say we, as in me, Gir and Spunky. My ability to never stay on topic amazes me. This was on ... Canadians getting banned off of Demonoid, wasn't it?

I thought Canada was possibly the country where this is "more" legal rather than "less", or at the very least less persecuted.

Elvis is god. No one can contest that. And Gods deserve 100 million dollar yachts. Or atleast their own Mc Donalds where they can win Elvis look-alike competition.
