One gripe I have with the block system (or at least, what I know about it), is that it just seems way to easy to block. Just pressing up, down, left, and right is to simplistic, and we'll never be able to hit anyone. If i want that, i'll go play some QTE sequences in Shenmue, or Dragon's Lair. Now I know you guys probably already know this, and will change it. So here is my idea on how to fix it. It's pretty long, and my first actual suggestion, so just stick with me here. And make sure you read it all if your gonna comment.

My General Idea

Now, as it stands, while your opponent is queuing up attacks, they appear on the your screen as up, down, left, or right, regardless if it is a kick or punch, or if it is light or heavy. My idea is as your opponents attacks appear on your screen, it tells you, with different sprites or something, that this is a light down punch, a heavy right kick, a medium up punch, or whatever he's preforming. Now to block, you cant just press down, or right, or whatever the direction is. You'll have to imput that you want to block a light down punch, not just a down, or that you want to block a heavy right kick, not just a right. Also, if you fail to imput the correct command, I think the stun system Sonic Boyster suggested in this thread here (scroll down a bit) should take effect. Now To do these things, you'll of course need to incorporate more buttons, which I will explain below.

The Buttons

Holding left click while pressing a direction, will preform a light block in the direction you pressed. So you press up while holding left click, and you block a light attack up. The same idea for medium and heavy, only different buttons.

To block a medium attack, instead of holding left click, you hold down the middle mouse button (scroll button), and press a direction. And for heavy attacks, you hold right click while pressing a direction.

Now this isn't it, these maneuvers will only block light, medium and heavy punches, not kicks. To block kicks, you do the exact same thing except now you must hold the space bar too (this button can be changed to whatever you want, I just used it because I use the wasd keys, and space is the most comfortable for me). So if your opponent attacks with a medium left kick, you would counter by holding the middle mouse button for medium, space (or whatever) for the kick, and then you press left to execute the block.

Now this may seem way to complicated at first look, but I don't think it's all that bad. It will require a bit of a learning curve, but so does every other fighting game. Now I'm not saying it's still easy, you would have to be pretty damn good to block every attack all the time. But of course, practice makes perfect.

Summary

Here is an example to sum it up:

Your opponent attacks with a light up punch, a light left punch, a medium down kick, and a heavy right punch.

To counter you would hold left click and press up, hold left click and press left, hold the middle mouse button and space (changeable) and press down, and finally hold right click and press right. Of course if you screw up, Sonic Boyster's Stun system idea would come into play.

I think this more complex blocking system makes blocking much harder than attacking (which it should be), but It's still not impossible.

Any critz, comments, or changes would be greatly appreciated. I just hope that they haven't already changed the blocking system, publicly announced it, and I somehow missed that and am now making an ass outta myself.

Well for one thing I believe you have to block by pressing a direction and the appropriate attack, attacks being punch or kick. You're suggesting that system be replaced with a light/medium/hard attack block system that would ignore whether you were attacked with a punch or a kick, which would be slightly more difficult but not very much. Personally I don't want to see middle mouse used at all during melee because not everyone's mouse has three buttons and it's easy to miss-click or roll it which could have other negative side effects. I think two buttons for blocking (punch and kick) is good enough, but I agree with a system where it's a little harder to block medium and or hard attacks requiring you to press another button or something. I think you're on to something, but not quite this.

And thanks for referring to my idea! Hey, somebody cares eh?

Edit-- And S, maybe you should read over the suggestion again. I misunderstood the first time too, but I think he's just suggesting that you press left-mouse and a direction to deflect a light attack from that direction and right-mouse and a direction to deflect a hard attack.

Sonic i took your advice and reread his suggestion and your right i did sort of misuderstand it mybad

On-topic - As far as i can see this might spice things up a little which might actually be really good. Only problem i see now is the buttons one but apart from that i fully support this idea but im sure if you can't the team might be able too pick em this would definetaly make melee a bit harder and again sorry bout the negative first post :laff:
