Where can I get A steam version of half life and do I have to get a new half life or can I upgrade my won half life

Hi guys, can u plz answer my question? I have just bought HL2 and I don't have the first one, so I'd like to know if this mod works with HL2.

Would the latest version be 1.2, 1.2.1, or 1.2.2 or 1.2.3? Which will work? I know deifinetly 1.2 would work but if possible I would like to have the improvements in the later versions. Can they run on non steam half life? Thanks for any help you can give me.
