Ehhh, I wouldn't really lean on hardware this gen. Both PS4 and Xbone are very equal. They have mostly rival parts, with the cpu's being the exact same. The big difference is ps4's ddr5 ram which will read/write just a bit faster and use less power. that's not really a noticeable difference since I can't see a game going above 3 gigs of ram and they both have 8 gigs altogether.

The xbone will have alot of background processes, otherwise, but those'll barely dent to the high end of the ram space.

All the software will come down to how well optimized it is on either system.

Again, its enough of a difference for me to prefer the 360 over the PS3 for multiplatform games. DDR5 vs DDR3 is significant enough to me that even 3 fps will sway me. Then again, the PS3 was supposed to be vastly superior to the 360 and it ended up being the worse of the two for multiplatform games.

And they are both playing catch-up with PC and failing. Admittedly, good efforts though.

I think we will see PS5 and Xbox Two within 3 years as their technology will be outdated again. For eg. I haven't seen any info yet as to the technology used for their HDDs. Sata II/III ? They definitely haven't got SSD that's for sure. Going AMD with their GPUs was also a bad idea, considering how far behind ATI is falling at the moment in their market.

PS: Why are new consoles trying so hard to be a PC?

Why would they need to "catch up" to PCs when they're making far more money than they know what to do with?

Kinda, I guess. An expensive computer setup would be better, of course, but 400/500 dollars is a good investment for any normal consumer. A computer with an octa-core, similar motherboard with wireless and bluetooth on board (sony/microsoft develops boards specifically for the consoles so I dunno the specifics on the MB), 8 gigs of ram, and a large harddrive would probably be in the 700 dollar to 1k range.

That's assuming you're buying piece by piece, and not counting the price of assembly if you order it whole. Not to mention you're buying exclusives and much higher optimization (since there's only 3 consoles, and thousands of computers, it's easy to optimize a game across an entire market on a console.) So unless you have a very high end computer, which most dont, a console games stability will be a little better. Unless you have that perfect combination of hardware.

It'd almost certainly be less than 1k to build a system comparable to the new consoles. The only reason to have a console is to play the games that don't make it to pc.

I think my 700 dollar mark was a good guess. It's about 500 for a comparable motherboard/processor combo. I personally found them on ebay and amazon between 450 and 600 dollars, depending on the board and processor speed. Motherboard tending to be the more expensive part. 320 gig HDD is about 50 bucks. 8 Gigs of ram will also be about 50. Mouse/keyboard/headset I'll say about 25 dollars since you can pick those up in any office depot dumpster. And if you want wireless and your particular MB doesn't have a chip slot for it, it'll be another 30 for either a pci card or a usb receiver.

I think that's all the console parts...? Mb, cpu, ram, bluetooth/wireless, controllers, hdd/ssd.

I do this for a living, btw.

And that actually brings up another question, are we stuck with whatever hard drive they give us or can I upgrade to a solid state/bigger drive?

A number which since the new consoles are so PC-like in architecture, should be equal to none. But they are going to go out of their way to keep releasing console exclusives just to milk the cash cow anyway.

I don't think so. The motherboards for the consoles are generally a weak spot because they are very basic and only need to be compatible with that 1 processor and no overclocking capabilities needed resulting in weak MB components across the board. The wireless and bluetooth modules are integrated into the MB too which is less costly than having external ones. The ram used is probably not that great in speed and latencies either. The HDDs are another concern as they are probably lacking too. They are probably not that bad as I make them seem to be, but those price points are based on build costs and account for profits too so they can't be more than around £300 to make, and that is including controllers and stuff. Or maybe they are just making what they are losing on the consoles back through the ongoing Online services.

PS4 has confirmed possibility of HDD upgrades while I don't really know about Xbox. You will probably need to buy an upgrade from them though, formatted by them with a legit copy of the PS4 OS.

You might want a power supply. I don't do this for a living, though.

It's confirmed for the PS4 that the hdd is upgradeable, though it'd take a bit to fill up 500 gb.

Ah, ****. Knew I was forgetting something...

Yeah, I don't think I'd need more than 120 gigs so I figured I'd get an ssd for the extra 90 bucks. Lord knows I ain't gonna be spending the extra on a Vita.

You will very likely have to buy whatever HDD upgrades they bring out because I doubt Sony will release the PS4 OS just so you can format your console whenever you get a new HDD. So you will probably have to buy a HDD upgrade with the legit PS4 OS on it from Sony.

Yeah, probably.

I honestly don't know why I'm excited in the first place. The only 2 things I cared about were pokemon x/y and smash bros.

That was entirely my point. The PS4 showed almost nothing in the way of exclusives. Destiny is a multiplatform game. It isn't an exclusive. Infamous looks okay for a cinematic, but I've seen nothing in terms of actual gameplay to suggest it'd be different from the last 2. The Last of Us looks pretty amazing, but it's also going to have almost no replay value. The rest were completely forgettable to me.

Sony's presentation was all about what it isn't--and xbox one--and not what it would provide us in the way of exclusives. It's for that reason that XBO presentation was stronger when it came to actual games.

That said, I'm leaning towards the PS4 solely because of its hardware at this point.
I think they also announced a lot of games without showing them. Correct me if I'm wrong. Also I'm assuming both may have done this, maybe. Yeah the XBO presentation was indeed stronger, but it too wasn't strong because of the exclusives. Now if only they'd have done that from the first time it was announced and avoided all that unnecessary bad PR.

I keep seeing people mention the Last of Us, but it seems they're only releasing it on the PS3.

In terms of consoles the PS4 seems better, in terms of games I'm going with the Xbone.

The Division is the only game I'm actually excited about. But then, people tend to play these kinds of games like complete morons unless you can find a group willing to think and play tactically.

Well, all I need to do now is convince some of my friends to play this with me and make ourselves a nice little team....

Oh yeah, that's right. I don't have any friends... Woops. Well I guess this is another game I will miss out on. Most unfortunate because it looks like a sweet game. As Diomedes pointed out most people would play this game completely wrong, which makes me sad because you'll never really see such sweet gameplay like in that trailer. Also is it actually on line? I hope not because I can already imagine the 13 year olds screaming frantically in their mic's and you having to listen to their nonsense, or the ****s that put their mic's on while they listen to really loud shitty music for everyone to have to endure. If that does happen, I would need my instant universal mute button at all times at the ready. Or as Norton the Silencer would yell: SILENCE. And everything would be nice and peaceful.

This game just made me yap a bunch of nonsense. Holy shit does it look good.
