Okay, Wangster-Make sure you're running Windows XP. But, if you are and still can't do it..
I've found another way, just for you!
Right Click the icon for 'Control Panel' and hit "Manage."
On the right of that screen it should say "Services and Applications." Double click it.
Then double click 'Services.
There should be a long list. Find 'Messenger.' Double click it.
Turn STARTUPTYPE to "DISABLED" and click STOP on Service Status.
Tada.
