Tales art work updated 9/16/04

Well im startin a new thread! im probably going to make some tutorials now.

if you remembered from my old thread i had a pix of two kids riding on a horse. ill put the work in progress on this thread~

there's the pix

i first convert it to gray scale, then i create a new layer that only has it's line art. set it on the layer on the top then i add colors.

here's the WIP i have so far

i usually go from dark to light. but this time i added a base color to see if the colors are compelling enough. use the color wheel to find complementary colors~ well i hope i finish this soon=D

there are many different ways~ ill put all the steps together later~

You draw a lot more faces than you do anything else don't you? Your heads look fantastically polished, but the rest of the composition looks a bit more hurried and incomplete. There's alot of techinical things you should work on. Like anatomy and cloth folds (my two weaknessess as well), as well as hardware and perspective. A lot of your weapons look bizarre. For example, that keyblade is quite thin and dainty. A freind of mine is a fantastic illustrator, but when it comes to the hardware he has a lot of problems. I find personally that it helps a lot to do tons of research on that stuff before you do the drawing. I did an MGS3 piece a while ago (stiff anatomy, of course, maybe I'll redraw it later...) and I spent a couple days just researching and sketching authentic Vietnam era weapons and equipment just so it would look right.

For anatomy and perspective saveloomis.org.

Other than that though you show a ton of promise. I'm really impressed with your pencil rendering. You have a really fantastic control of line that will be all the better when you clear up all those techinical things.

@MrDomino: Okay, where should I begin? I just have to say that i LOVE your critiques. you actually give awesome ones. well.. i tried workin on anatomy.. trust me =( i think i remember all the muscles.. for frontal view only. but i guess i can never apply it to what i draw. any techniques you wanna share? and the keyblade, yar... sorry bout that.. haha im not too good with perspective!! and i really suck with patience...... sometimes!!! thanks for the crit anways. you can always tell me what you are thinkin so i can improve! i promise ill be promising.. =) JUST HELP ME IMPROVEEE

ty for the site.

anyways, a few new updates... i totally messed up sora's arm while inkin it.. hope you guys dont notice.. and i have also noticed that his arm is wayyyyyy too thin/small. besides that i cant spot anything big. i tried water color, this is like.. my 3rd attempt! so be sure to go easy on me!!!!

the other ones are just weird projects. hehe, i suck at usin acrylics

It's not so much knowing the physical anatomy. I took an anatomy course for just that reason and while it did help me with the basic build, it didn't really help me with the application of that build. It's really about understanding how things move and how things sit in space naturally. Here's an example:

Old
New

The old sketch was before I really started observing natural forms but after I took an anatomy class. While all the muscles are in the right place the pose is unnatural and stiff and apart from that the cloth folds are wacky. The new piece is what I'm currently working on as part of a supersecret project (keep a tight lip!). After reading Loomis' Figure Drawing for All it's Worth and carrying a small sketchbook around with me everywhere to just draw things as they happen, I think everything looks more "real" so to speak. I still have a long way to go, but I think this illustrates what I'm talking about.

I guess what it boils down to is check out that book and practice.

I really respect your painting work. I have some small talent with watercolor, but acrylic kicked my ass all over the place. It's important that you know all the traditional media as it gives you a ton of insight into color as a whole. I may give it a shot again somewhere down the line.

woah, nice stuff... i cant believe how great every1 is these days, im way outta practice. You got some really awesome work here tails, love the way u shade, and ur line weight and quality is amazing. Once again very inspiring, and lookin at what mr.domino said, i agree with everything. Im not one for acrylics either, not too bad with water colour, pretty good with gouache though :]
