Some one PM'ed me about starting Martial arts classes and what to expect from them, i ended up sending it in 3 parts because i wrote so much so im not gonna let it go to waste, the ppl here can have a read, im not all singing, all dancing so dont go on a mission to catch me out on things if you know more about martial arts.

Well there are MANY styles of martial arts, it depends what you are looking for, ill give you an over view of what to expect from a few styles

Karate- very strong style's designed to kill
Kung-fu\Wushu- very graceful, great fun to train but not really practical in a real fight
Tae kwon do- A Korean Art, teaches leg work, High kicking etc
judo\ju-jitsu- lots of throws, locks, dislocating\braking bones
kick boxing/- boxing with kicking I guess, probably the most practical in a street fight.

I my self train Wado-Ryu Karate, and do a bit of Kung-fu. Wado-Ryu is one of many styles of karate and in my opinion is the best because you get to learn throws, locks and generally how to maim people:D

What to expect from lessons.

In traditional styles like karate, kung-fu and Tae Kwon Do, you'll get things called Kata's\Forms or Patterns. These are a set of move's which have to be learned to progress onto you next stage of the course (that’s how you get you belts). The best way to describe these Kata's\Forms or Patterns, is its like a dance which you do, only the moves you are doing are a reconstruction of a fight and you are kicking the crap out of your imaginary opponents.

In kickboxing you'll you a lot of "Pad work" which means punching and kicking punch bags and pads etc.

In pretty much all martial arts you should get some sort of semi/full contact "sparring". Sparring is basically fighting, most martial arts have only semi-contact sparring, which means you can't hit your hardest its only light taps(or so they say:D o_o), with the sparring most martial arts have to ware protective pads on the hands, feet, shins, and sometimes head.

Finding a school

The best way to learn martial arts is to go to a martial arts school, don’t get over priced i would say $5 is ok for a lesson, just because the lessons are cheap doesn’t mean you get crap tuition, if your paying a lot it probably means the teacher cares more about his bank balance that his students. The best way to judge a club would be to take a few lessons and see how much you learn and how well you were taught

Just remember there is a hell of a lot to learn in martial arts I only know a little, that’s probably an information overload there, I hope it helps.

Someone should Sticky this cause it might help people.. I was in karate once I quit though because of this thing called "Stance" I guess thats how you spell and whats its called it anyways you like do combo things but it was like move forward 10 steps turn to left high punch, low punch turn left high kick, block turn right and move forward 8 steps punch, high kick move forward 2 Repeat,

It was alot to do and we didn't ever once get to spar with each other which sucked ya know.

I highly resent Tae Kwon Do being singled out as a false martial art.

Have you ever taken it past green belt? Black belt? No, I thought not.

Well, a lot of that can depend on the kinda class. Some schools focus totally on Katas as a means to gain rank, some barely touch Katas at all.

And, I think Aikido classes won't do sparring because it's so defensive having a spar is pretty impossible? So I don't think I should be too worried if an Aikido school says there's no sparring, correct?

Anyway, despite my experiences with the worst TKD school ever, I'm hoping to get in something now. This board has been helpful, although you could almost say more from a nutrition/fitness standpoint:

sorry if i offended you Cucumber but TKD was only developed about 30 years ago, and was developed as a sport its still a good marital art to do but it's not really practical, but saying that most marital arts dont work anyway.

the only reason why i mentioned that is because i dident want someone saying that TKD wasent a marital art and then just turn the thred into spam

i apologise

I'd done TWD for six years. I got the brown belt (that's two belts before the black one). I think it's really cool. I had a few fights and I sometimes won easily. I think it's very useful if you can kick someone in his ass. Sadly, It's not always useful, but than, you can use your rage to win a fight :D . It was always very successfully.
Currently, I'm thinking of starting Karate, because I'm good with my legs, but I want to be better with my arms.
SSJ-Goku

P.S.: Does anyone know a good Ki site, with techniques to train?? I'm trying it for a few month. OK, I'm not so good at it, but everyone starts once.

We all used to love linking the The Official Martial Art Ki Page here, but the site went down. I still have some of the content saved in MS Word docs - perhaps I could even post it right into the forums?

Anyway, I'll reference some sites I have not checked:
How to use Ki

The Ki Manual

Wow, a LOT of sites dead... hey!

The Official MA Ki Page's Ezboard forums is still up. Here's the last post on it:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I apologize for my abscence. I've been very busy this last past year. I decided to take a trip across the country to see some of the world and straighten some things out.

One of the decisions I have had to make is that I will no longer be selling the manuals or running this website. After having taught myself most of what I know about life force cultivation (despite some ludicrous claims I stole my work from Skywind's site by people who werent even around when I first created my website) I have come to the conclusion it's just too much for most people to handle. You end up having no one to really talk to or communicate with, face to face, about your training. No one to show you exactly how to perform techniques or spar with. No one you can truely identify with who isnt known as some internet call name like Goku99 or Matrixman38.

I dont think this is a healthy enviroment for people anymore.

I myself have my own questions I havent gotten answers for. I ask myself everyday "How much farther do I want to go? What happens when I become the most powerful? What do I do then? Should people really become this strong? Why should we become this strong? Is such power really neccassary?"

Until I can answer my own questions, I will not answer anyone elses.

Thats not to say I'm not going to pass you all over to someone else who can help you. There is a very talented man by the name of John La Tourrette who works with Huna in Oregon. He is very, very good at teaching how to use life force energy for martial arts and healing. His information is much more expensive than my 50$ manuals ever were, but they teach much more. I will post the information to order his information now-

American Sports Training Institute
6252 Dark Hollow Road
Medford, Oregon 97501
(503)-535-3188

He also has ads in Blackbelt Magazine quite often.

The last thing I will say here is about the difference between "chi" and "psi". People, there is no difference. Theres only one energy that makes up the universe. It merely can do an infinite amount of things. The only differences are those that are in your limited human mind. Until you let go of those limitations, you will never achieve your potential.

I would of left my website as an archive of sorts, but seems Niio Goku decided to thrash it. As such, I've left him with a very special title for whenever he posts here now.

Take care,

Sorry to say that your wrong again :p

TKD was created when 5 much older martial arts were merged into TKD by communist Korea. Only Tang Soo Do and Hapkido survived with any identity. And if we are disqualifying over age, shouldn't Jeet Kune Do be excluded as well . . . seeing as it's younger than TKD by about a decade (or more). If you think TKD is useless or a sport, you are sadly mistaken, and have only seen the poorest examples of the worst schools. -_-

And don't worry about defending TKD from spam, that's why I have a ban saber.

Yeah but what if the guy is well trained and you cant hit him through the door? What if you cant hit him at all? Then your assed out. The problem is chances are he wont be WELL trained, will think hes hot stuff and will end up getting his ass handed to him.

Edit: Hmm..... apparently my post didnt get checked for bad words. Ohh well.

Bruce Lee was shot by people from his country. They didn't want Bruce Lee to teach people in other countries the martial arts he knew so they killed him.

:S I never feel like reading the details, but you can go to the GameFAQs Martial Arts board I linked to and read some of the stuff on Bruce. He had some flaws, like never really understanding internal systems like Wing Chun. I don't really care, but if you think he's all that you may want to go check out the other side of it.
