At least Revolution actually made sense, I mean, look at the controller. Pretty revolutionary.

Nintendo Wii - Cause when you gotta go, you gotta go.

So, their angle is that the word 'Wii', which I'm sure people end up pronouncing "Why" is going to bring players more in touch with their gaming system?

Haha, why didn't they call it the Nintendo Laid and their promotion could be, "Now even video game nerds can get laid!"

Brutal.

Well, Bozon-IGN from IGN confirmed on the forums that there will be something big later tonight. Here is what he had to say below.

Ya know. A day of it already is enough. Screw calling it Rev or Wii.

We've got some sweet stuff for you today.

(Figured these boards need a "non-Wii" topic

RyltarX Responded:Thanks!

Sorry about all the hate you've been getting from idiots, too
Bozon-IGN Responded: Hey man. Everyone felt different when they found the news out. I was pissed. Still don't like it, but everyone has their opinion.

Plus. I had a little fun with the whole thing (insert crappy photoshop Iwata, haha).

As soon as we can.

Don't expect Nintendo to drop a big bomb. I'm just sick of seeing our boards so one-traked... we've got some cool stuff for ya tonight
Matt Charms in:Oh, Lord.

Bozon is banned from the boards.

Seriously, there is no megaton tonight. Do not get hyped. Do not. Please... don't.

We've just got a solid update.

Matt

While the name was confirmed and Nintendo seems to show no interest in changing it ...i definitely dont think it's impossible. Either way, it has to do with " Wii "-- we can only hope it's what everyone wants to see.

Sounds good.

I'm hoping the controller itself gets named. I'm thinking the "Wiimote" ;)

I cant take this anymore, i have to get this off my chest. I never thought it come to this.. but all i can say now is nintendo is FINISHED. No one but the hardcore N fans will buy it. It is the first console in history that has a name no one wants to say or is too embarrased to say. Most people would be too embarrassed to ask for one at the store. Most casual players would immediately write it off as being "***". This is nintendo's last console.

It seemed REVOLUTION had everything going for it. Cheap dev costs, cheap price, cool design, tons of exclusives, tons of 3rd party support, and a GOOD NAME. But for all of you that think that its only a name and that it wont affect the console's success, WRONG. 90% of People wont buy it anymore with a name like Wii, which will lead to less sales, which will lead to devs abandoning it becuase they wont make enough money due to a small fanbase, which will lead to nintendo sitting in the bottom of the barrel once again.

And Nintendo's failure this up coming gen wont just be becuase of the name, it will also be becuause Nintendo doesnt listen to their fans. They don't seem to care what we want, and only now am I aware of that. I mean, even when IGN told perrin kaplan that there were numerous pettitions to get the name Revolution back, she just said "deal with it". A company who depends on their fanbase for sales shouldn't jeopradise that.

If you think that im the only one who cares about this, ask people at your school or work or whatever the case may be about the name, I can guarantee you they will either say "WTF?!?" or "***, im not buying it then, thats retarded". I know becuase those are the responses that i got from everyone in four different classes, and these are mostly casual gamers or non gamers (which is who nintendo is trying to get to buy it). So it looks like Nintendo has just lost the audience they were targetting and some of their fanbase, like me. Not just becuase of the name, but because they treat us like crap, and expect us to buy whatever they throw at us.

Im not supporting Nintendo in any shape or fashion anymore. I am seriously considering not getting a Wii (ill never call it that unless forced to) which is a big deal becuase it was the console that had me the most excited for any console ever. I would rather take sony's empty promises and lies or microsoft's BS then the stupidity and screwing over fans Nintendo does.

Now devs wont take it seriously and will abandon it. All this 3rd party support will wear thin in about four months, mark my words.

So my last words as a Nintendo Fanboy is this, forget you Nintendo, you ruined what could have been the next snes in terms of a game library and screwed over me, one pf your truest fans for the last time, I and many others will never support you again.

What a stupid company. :S

dude... it's okay, calm down, step away from the balcony. First off, Wii is still the Revolution, so Wii is everything they say the Revolution will be. Second: they've had worst names in the past. GCN was codenamed Project Dolphin, nothing is more retarded than that.

It's a name. It's not the end of the world.

Exactly. Plus, whats wrong with Wii. Are you just too embarrassed to say "HEY I GOT A WII !"

Devs wont take it seriously, because of a name? Eh... why wouldn't they? Oh sure, they're advertisements may be like "Only on the Nintendo Wii", but theres not many game advertisements anyway (at least over here in Australia). Let me tell you something. I know a John. Yet there are like, 6000000 Johns. John is a typical name. But, is the John I know typical? No. He eggs houses everyday, even his own. Once he egged mine. Once we went out drinking beer when we were obviously underage (11).

Dont judge a book by its cover. Dont judge a console by its name.

That doesn't make any sense. We give things labels for a reason and judge them accordingly. Would you be as willing to try Pizza if it was called AssCake? Sure, there's more to something than a name. But the name also means something.

I do have to agree that people will not like the name in North America but in other countries maybe it won't be as bad seeing as how other countries have different languanges (I'm not kidding really check it out
http://www.yourdictionary.com/languages.html) and another thing if you were one of their truest fans wouldn't you still buy it?

You also have to take into account that the vast majority of games are released in Japanese only, English only, or both Japanese and English. How many games do you think are released in Italian, Portuguese, French and Spanish?

In any case, a name doesn't have to 'mean' anything--it's all about the image that the name projects, and.. Wii isn't generally liked. Nintendo's going to have to either live with that, or change it. If they had any sense, they'd change it (or better yet, have done market research before embarassing themselves), but seeing as how the cat's been let out of the bag, I think it's much more likely Nintendo will stick with the name as an idiotic badge of honor. "We're different! ... Strange, but different."

I just hope it doesn't affect the games.

If you wont buy it because of a name you're relatively superficial to begin with, and as such you should avoid the revolution and go with the big $500 PS3 when that comes out. I think the name is stupid too, but all you have to do is substitute "Wii" for "Revolution" like so many of us still are and boom, fixed.

Sonic, remember... A lot of the people who grew up on Nintendo were whining about being "alienated" by Wind Waker's cel-shaded graphics, so it should be no shock that they complain about the Wii name.

36,440 "It sucks," vs. 14,833 "It's okay, or I like it" for GameFAQs. (Note that GameFAQs is notoriously pro-Nintendo, and this is still a landslide loss for Nintendo--only 4689/51273 said they favored the name.)
Not true. Most, if not all of the selections for the poll on GameFAQs only reflect a particular thought, and frankly I think most of them were simultaneous for everybody. I, myself, answered "wtf were they thinkin?" but I actually find the name kind of cute after saying it so many times in one day.

I play with the Wii ones!:D

I have to agree with a point already made here, if you are superficial enough to hate the console based on it's name, and are already making up cute bs like "wiitaded" then you deserve your $700 PS3 with zero innovation. Seriously, what's in a name? Absolutely nothing.

Take this from a person who calls himself "Cucumba" arguably the 3rd or 4th most rediculous name on the net.

If you're talking about me, I've already stated several times that while I dislike the name, it doesn't really change how I feel about the system--just about Nintendo's opinion of us all. Also, I'm not the one who started with the "wii"-stuff. That'd be some guy a few pages back and Wolf immediately before me. :p

As I also said, I just hope the name change doesn't affect developer's opinion of the system, and consequently the games developed for it. As for innovation--as has been proven many times in the past by both Nintendo and Sony (Virtual Boy, EyeToy)--manipulation gimmicks aren't always good ideas.

As far as the name is considered--as others have pointed out--many things have strange names. Google, Amazon, EBay--but they're not stupid. Like Wii is.

Actually, the most common word for 'revolution' in Japanese would be "henkaku," but as Shiyojin said, I was showing how the Japanese would pronounce the English word "Revolution."

They would say "Reborushiyon," not "Levoruutionuh" as Raven had said.
I said it depends on the context :p But, you could be right, my japanese isn't the best. (Online Japanese dictionary for the win!)
And I didn't notice you were talking about the pronounciation XD.

But the thing that is wrong with the name is tha for example Google, Ebay, Altavista, are all home-made made-up (wtf?) names. But Wii, is supposed to stand for "we" they just call it W"ii" because they think it probably sounds cooler, but actually it sounds rather retarted.

Hmm, at least nintendo came up with a new name and didn't just put a bigger number after the name.

100 years later:
"Will you buy the new ps34?"
"No, I'll buy a xbox 15280. The name sounds cooler"

To Wii:

"Daddy, daddy I want a Wii. I promise I'll play with it all day"
^^

That name isn't THAT bad :p

I dunno, I never buy consoles anyways, but the name Wii, does sound odd... especially for a dutch guy like me.. I wonder how we will pronounce it.

wii?

I pronounce it as "whee" now >_<
