I think the problem is that low-ping players just get upset when high-pingers whine and moan about their latency all the time (as the thread starter indicated). It's only natural that they would want to defend themselves and preserve their playing credibility/skill by asserting that ping doesn't matter; it's all about skill, timing, speed blah blah.

I think everybody just needs to accept the fact that ping matters, andthat there's no point in whining about if yours is particularly bad. That's just the nature of online gaming folks.

Melee is good most of the time but you do need beams in some ocasions.
I was playin with neo clan befor they had between 40 + 17 ping and i had 150 it was a bit laggy but ok i guess.

By the way did i mencion i got mawled lol.

Ping is still a large factor in melee, at least in the skilled realm. Say if you are close range swooping with someone but you've swooped second. When the person comes out of swoop and you go to him, but you pass right through him because you have a 150 ping. If you had a 50 ping, I'm quite sure you'd have a better shot at hitting the person because you wouldn't have to have 100 milliseconds less reaction time to get where you need to be. Also, using angles requires a lot of knowledge about distance, speed, and PING. A 40 ping person has an easier time going around a head on and hitting someone in the side then someone with a 250. Also, if someone had a 150 ping, they'd have to be able to anticipate the teleporting of a host because generally they wouldn't see anything until it was too late. Feel free to argue it but for every millisecond someone has on someone else, it's that much quicker the higher pinged person has to be. It's not exactly the same to a point where it's meaningless. Pings just feel different in itself. To say ping means nothing is narrow-minded in my opinion.

Yeah, I would say that was pretty much spot on Hal

Reacting to tight situations is a particular problem for High-Pingers. Whereas a low ping player can pull off their sweet little combos, teleport to avoid swoops, reflex block, etc, it's just nigh on impossible for a high ping player to do the same when fighting an lpb.

I had this theory on a melee attack command that cycles when you hold it down. It was based on that if your computer ran quicker or ping was lower the cycle was much more fluent. And when you would collide with an enemy whichever cycle clicks the melee trigger first engages the enemy. Or maybe I'm wrong? But look at it this way, best strategy is to AVOID head on collisions.

I know that sounds cowardly or odd, but it is your best bet in winning a fight. Sometimes you just can't take chances. It's harder to teleport out of the way though with a higher ping and I can understand that. But my strategy is to get them from their side or back. Head on's are just too risky.. especially with low health.

Cowardly or odd? That's how you should do it..

Everyone might hate me for this but (i'm not complaining about melee because i did suck at first but now i'm a whole lot better) i think the dammage done from melee should be reduced to a negligable ammount and that most if not all dammage should be done with beams and other ki attacks. now it is extremely easy to dodge a beam, and even easier to rape beam spammers if you see them and they dont get you from behind. But its hard to avoid dammage when your lying prone because of a laque of ki from a lengthy melee dual. I just think it would be more interresting that way as most of the time 1 on 1 fights between 2 expierenced players consist of nothing more than melee because it is just simply the best and easiest way to kill someone (not couting the idiots that hide and try to Genki Dama everyone else that is fighting). Thats just my opinion and i realize that alot of things need and will be improved but i wont give a list because everyone already knows them all. Lemme know what you all think

400-500 something like that, i'm not lying and like i said ping has nothing to do with anything-the way i see it. that's how it is with me it doesn't stop me from doing anything (my fps isn't too good either) anyway, i'm not wasting any more time on this board.

Things condensed and explained simply for some people

1) Ping does NOT matter in head to head, since in 1.1 it's based on KI (NOTE: For any people who are confused, KI is not Power level)

2) Ping DOES matter in close quarters melee (as described above). With half a second delay, you often get hit from where you used to be.

3) Ping DOES matter when the person you are meleeing is particularly skilled. This matters whether you are skilled or not.

I'm a hpb with a ping of 200+ average. I lose 9/10 head-on engagements against low ping players, whether my Ki is full or not (and I can tell you that there are times when I know my opponent's ki certainly isn't high). I'll freely admit that I'm a terrible melee player, and that I lose many of my CQ duels even against fellow high-pingers. But the point is that in head-to-head swoops I generally have an even chance of beating somebody with the same (or higher) ping than me. I don't stand a chance against somebody with a low-ping unless they are incompetent and failing to hold down right mouse button.

Explain why . . .

Its not based on ping!! The only thing that would effect melee is that your character doesnt respond quick enough.

Death Biscuit, the first thing in explaining why is to see (since you only have 10 posts) if you know the difference between Ki and Power level.....

Power level is the actual number...
Ki is the blue bar underneath...

They are two seperate values.

with the new melee i can win head on charges even against 0 pingers now, no mater how high mine is. Death Biscuit i think your problem is that the new hitboxes are a bit smaller thus makeing it easier for you to miss, and if you do miss even by a little bit you will get nailed.

I know it's not based on ping, because I, too, can beat the hell out of hosts on their own servers now. And don't give me this total bull about the difference between a 50 ping and a 150 ping being so huge that you are losing over and over because of it. Unless you're a robot a .1 second difference in swoop times after you click the mouse isn't going to lose a fight for you. Your CPU and framerate has a bigger impact on confused packets and client-side signals than your living another .1 second away from the server.

Yeah I know the difference, but it seems irrelevent in the fights with low-pingers I've had.
In future, try to read the entire thread before patronising me again. It's the least I would expect from a elder with more than twice as many posts as myself . . .

Maxim, yeah I think you're probably right. Head-to-head is only relevant if both opponents strike eachother squarely. It should be noted that I've only started having this problem since 1.1. I was able to do reasonably well in melee before, and that's why I'm so surprised that many people are claiming melee is better for hpbs in 1.1. But I think what you said is probably correct; I'm not striking my opponents face-to-face (probably has a bit to do with ping as well). So even though ping may not directly affect head-on battles, indirectly it does.
