Looks like the music industries are taking new steps to prevent pirating. The newest Beastie Boys' CD apparently installs an anti-rip 'virus' without consent from the user. Shows you how desperate these companies are getting just to get some exra bucks. I personally think it's an invasion of privacy but most people know how I am.

A new Beastie Boys' CD called "To the Five Boroughs" (Capitol Records), is raising hackles around the Web for reputedly infecting computers with a virus.

According to a recent thread at BugTraq, an executable file is automatically and silently installed on the user's machine when the CD is loaded. The file is said to be a driver that prevents users from ripping the CD (and perhaps others), and attacks both Windows boxen and Macs.

The infected CD is being distributed worldwide except in the USA and UK, which prevents us from giving a firsthand report. However, according to hearsay, we gather that the Windows version exploits the 'autorun' option, and that the Mac version affects the auto play option.

On Windows, when a CD is loaded, a text file called autorun.inf is read, and any instructions within it are executed. In this case, the machine is instructed to install some manner of DRM driver that prevents copying. We haven't seen either the .inf file or any of the executables, so we can't say how or at what level it accomplishes this - or if indeed it actually does accomplish this.

But assuming that the unconfirmed reports are accurate, we have here a media company infecting users' machines silently with a file that affects a computer's functionality, without first obtaining informed consent: a likely violation of pretty much every jurisdiction's anti-hacking laws. It's possible to foresee criminal charges being brought at some point: after all, having a good reason for spreading malware has never been much of a defence in court. And a file that alters a computer's functioning without the owner's informed consent is the very definition of malware. Because this malware can be transferred from machine to machine on a removable disk, and requires user interaction to spread, it is, quite simply, a computer virus. (A worm, on the other hand, is distinguished by its ability to spread without user interaction.)

i may make a few eneimies with this post, but why hasnt anybody shot the beastie boys yet?

however if it install something on to your pc without your consent, isnt that illegal?,

besides its flawed, you can record to a wav file directly from your sound card (not microphone), with some sound recorder type programs, you could then convert that wav file into an mp3 or burn it directly to a cd, there are ways around everything

make that 2 friends ^_^ lol (even though we friends already) but yea this will not go any further then what it has already, its merely the RIAA testing their limits and probably gonna come out and say "We were seeing how people like having illegal stuff happen to them" something stupid lol like one of their spokespeople said on tv once and i quote "Recording a audio cassette tape is nothing like a burning a cd. A tape loses quality over time while the CD never dies down so making cassette copies is legal but cd burned copies are illegal" now what the hell is the difference? there is none besides qualty and how long it will last. other then that its the same exact thing! so they need to think before they speak lol

I'm not sure if "viruses" (or virii, if you will) are considered illegal to make/distribute, since most government agencies (in the USA anyways) only take action when there is X amount of tangible damage.

As for that method of cd-protection, who do they think they're trying to stop?

I have auto-play disabled anyways. Or just hold shift when you put the CD in to stop it from autoplaying. Then boot up your favorite cd-ripper. Not a big deal.

i hope other industries wont do this... life without music will be... just... crazy.

why dont they just make a file to make the cd unwritable... meaning no copying... editing... cracking... whatever... but one virus from that cd can lead to other viruses...

You know, there is one thing I really dont understand. I once had p2p software installed, but I deleted it because I realized something.

If you really like an artist(s) and really lile their music, why download the music for free? If you go ahead and buy their cd,
a. it IS different. Having the original CD makes you feel... special? honest? I dont know, its just different then having a burned copy.
b. you support them and help them earn money which in return will probably mean them making more music.

People these days are too blinded by money, whether its a lot of money or little-no money, people are still blinded by it. Its really sad.

As for this virus, I think the music company that produced this CD are extremely rude. Installing a virus on your computer? How far are they willing to go? They need to know when too much is just too much.

yes your allowed to back up cds as my friend does. He backs up his cds to take in his car in case someone got in his car and tried taking his cd's then he still has his original at home. also cause i told him about some1 i talk to online they took their car in for repair once and left their cds in teh car and when they picked up the car the cds were gone.....but if the music industry is willing to go that far i can tell there would be a pretty big boycott on them. And yes this cd is NOT distributed in the USA yet as well as the UK due to that virus finding. And to those who claim its not a virus but spyware, it IS a virus, it prevents you from doing something you want to do infecting your computer to not want to do something so that would be considered a virus, it forces your computer to do something you dont want.
