I cannot think of any instance of where you need to make a sphere. My suggestion is to make maps, not follow tutorials. That is the way you get better.

I also think that's the best way. I learned it the same way.

Gizmo: Don't ask to soon. Just try-out somethings before asking for help. Then you will learn much faster.

Take a look at TWHL: click here

They have a lot of tut's.

...hmm if you are learning hammer by making maps and testing things you will be pretty sick of half finished maps after a while ;)

learn some basics and vertex tool good then find a DBZ theme to make and off you go!

the best way to learn stuff is:
read tutorials and truly understand them!
then try to figure out stuff by your own and practice, practice, practice.
also, find a GOOD mapping community where you find questions about almost everything that you can think of (i.e. www.thewall.de <- haha to all poop ppl who are not able to read german :p <- best mapping site ever)
so, whenever you're stuck on something, visit a mapping comminuty of your choice and search their forums. then, read DIFFERENT solutions for your problem and vice versa, etc etc ...

and now all that stuff i just wrote in short: learning by doing.

beeing a smart and creative mind is a must aswell ... just btw.

hope it helps :p

Try the VERC Collective. Though they seem to be focused mainly on HL2 content at the moment, they still have the large amount of HL1 tutorials and information that I remember.

Well atleast you've got a start with babelfish.

Maybe try TWHL

That site has a lot of tut's too. I used it many times.
