how to join other people's multiplayer games?

i have half-life 1 installed and steam.now when i start it up and go to the multiplayer i see no games hosted.also when i try to host a game it crashes.

Have you ran Half-Life at least once so that Steam updates all its files? And have you installed the latest version of ESF (1.2.3)?

If you've done what optimus has said and it still doesn't work, might I suggest you use Steam's find servers application outside of ESF, I had this problem as well and it works as long as you're not actually in ESF. Once you get a server listing (With the proper filters), you can enter ESF and it will display the servers. It's just on the first shot, or a fluke.
