i post here for a relative who does have a valid half life cd-key etc...
i told him about esf and that it is a asskicking game and he should play it cause it's just awesome....

allright.. the problem is.. he doesn't have internet at his pc..... so he doesn't have steam..
he just wants to play offline with bots (of course ;) )
now the question is, is it possible to play esf without steam? cause he gets the client.dll error or something.....
(i searched at the forum, and there always stands you need steam when this error comes, but there is no information if this is meant only for online or for off- and online)

it would be nice to have a clear answer (not just a link to another thread) ;)

thanks real goku@Patrick Star

Well you can simple give him your installed STEAM directory that works to ^^

If you trust him enough let him use your account for offline play ;)

That way he can use STEAM and not be connected to the internet.

well 1.1 was played normaly on WON you can try that

Or you can try 1.2.3 on WON but there is no guarantee it will work.

I play esf of won a lot and it works fine
ESF does not supports WON anymore, which meaning it "might" work, but you can get a lot of problems on the road. And "giving" him Steam installation has no use at all. You have to connect to the internet with steam once before you are able to use the offline mode.

You can open steam in offline mode. I've done it severals times when i lost my internet connection. It might be a good idea to use esf1.1. It doesn't have the advance melee system but it is good enough :)

He has to have the internet to begin with. With out it, he can't install hl or anything else and is reduced to playying on WON, witch is no longer supported.

You need internet atleast once, because Steam needs to connect with the whole Steam network stuff. After that you will just be able to play it in offline mode, so if he just buys half life 1, brings his computer to your place so he can make an account on his computer with internet and then he can put his steam in offline mode.

It's any version of half-life that doesnt use steam

Example

You remember counter-strike 1.5 where you just load it up instead of using steam? THATS won

if you've got a CD burner, you can try burning the ESF directory to a CD then have him copy that to his half-life directory. Any version older than 1.1 you can get your hands on should work, but I'm fairly certain he'll have to have half-life 1.1.1.0 to be able to play any version of ESF.

It is impossible to play online with WON, for online play you will need to use Steam.

It might be possible to host a LAN game with WON, but I'm not sure about that.

Wow, im surprised no one knows how to do this without WON or Steam.
Alright man this is what you need to do from scratch...

1) Install half life (or counter strike)
2) Install ESF in the correct directory
3) Install Updates if you have them.
4) Start game
5) Click Play esf (i think, might say play game or whatever)
6) click lan game
7) click create game

The rest is self explanitory.

If you do that, you will install half-life with WON ;/
When you install half-life, you install won automaticly...
