can i handle half life 2?

i have a 2.4 ghz cpu with a gforce 4 mx 420 or somethin like that i dont exactly know anyway if this isnt good enough can some one tell me what i need and what it might cost me? thanks

Well your processor is fine.. the video card could be better. For HL2 go with a newer ATI card (allthough I don't really know where your GeForce 4 mx 420 stands quality wise). How much RAM do you have and waht kind? If you have 512 or over, I think you'll be allright.

The minimum system spec is currently targeted at a 700 MHz PC with 128 MB RAM and a DX6-level video card, eg: TNT2 etc, meaning you won't need a supercomputer to run Half-Life 2 but don't expect to see reflective water,dynamic shadows and bump-mapped textures.

The game running at reasonable detail eg: 25/40 fps, requires a 1600Mhz cpu, 256 mb ram, GeForce4 Ti or Ati Radeon card.

In real life you need the best from a new game so I would recommend a 2000 cpu, or higher 512 mb ram or higher, GeForce4 Ti4800 128 ddr or ATI Radeon 9600 pro.
IF you've got the money ATI Radeon 9800 pro. or Geforce FX5900 ultra
The more power the better but not essential with this game.

i had the geforce 4 mx 440 ...
but it's an upgraded geforce 2 so it's really nothing special.
this card is old and for the games that will be coming out you would do best to get a new videocard
especially for the new games coming out like half life2 , doom3 (recent release doh ) and games in the near future

btw you cant even play some specific games with that card like prince of persia sands of time and splinter cell 1. because the card is old so they dont support the cipset anymore.

if you are a geforce freak then you nead the fx 5950 or the 6800, and for the ati freak you nead the Radeon 9800 or the x800 <-cant remember the exact name

the choice is yours.

I'd recommend an ATI card, since they're supposedly designed more around the HL2 engine, like how the Nvidia cards are designed more around the Doom 3 engine.
Go with a video card upgrade first. If you've got money to spend after that, and you're able to, get an extra 512MB or 256MB stick of RAM.

couldnt agree more.

also get a better video card, if your going toward hl2, ATI deffinately. they are designed for games like that. but they come at a huge price. i bought the ati radeon 9800 pro for $265. And where i live thats pretty expensive.(For people who live in the south: It's more expensive up here, but we get paid more so it evens out)

If you have money left over, buy a nother stick of 256 ram. and you'll have an even 512 ram. I dunno if you can have a stick of 256, and buy a 512... i dont think it works that way. maybe get rid of the 256 and buy 2 512's and you'll have a nice 1024 mb of ram. a good gb ^_^

The recommened specs for the full non leaked version of the game (shame on those that dled it) is about 1.0 ghz for the cpu. I think forgot about the ram and video card.

I'm always fascinated by people who massively overclock bootleg processors...and then get confused when things don't work right. I bet if you'd clocked back down it would have been better.

Actually the 2500 is simply a downclocked 3200. Not many people seem to know about that apparently. It is easily overclocked to 3200 with a couple fans.

CS : S only has like 1/4 of the total technology that's in half life 2. It'll definitely play better, not very accurate performance test.
