if u stop shooting ki into the beam its gonna stop existing
Series:
Krillin vs. Cybamen - Sayjin saga: Krillin charges up his scatter shot and fires it at Napa and Vegita. At the last second he pulls it up into the sky detaching it and then splits it into multiple smaller beams killing the cybamen.
Vegita vs. Gohan - Sayjin saga: Vegita charges up what appears to be a Renzoku Energy Dan and fires a large volly of them at him, however they are all in a beam form, also detached.
Vegita vs. Cell - Cell saga: Vegita charges up his Final Flash and sends it at Cell. After tearing Cells arm off it goes into the vacuum of space as a detached beam.
Gohan vs. Cell - Cell saga: Same as the last example but with Gohan, also a detached beam.
SSJ3 Goku vs. Buu - Buu saga: Goku charges up a Renzoku Energy Dan and fires it as detached beams.
Movies:
Piccolo vs. Doole - Cooler's Revenge: Piccolo stops fighting Coolers other two henchmen and shoots a detached beam at Doole that follows him and eventually kills him. There are many mnay other example but these are all that I could think of ATM.
So I think detached beams do exist and the loss of constant ki doesn't matter as long as they choose to keep the beam going but in a detached form.
I don't really see how making detached beams are unfair compared to detonating a beam, its just like a ball, they are both dumb fire and takes skill to hit a moving target. Detonation takes much less skill to use and makes no sense, since you are still attached to the beam that you want to detonate.
