I dont see how this would have any negative effect on this site. It would allow anime lovers to chat about... well, anime, and it would allow the esf forums to expand and attract a bigger crowd. On the other hand, I dont see how this could have any negative effects. Fill me in on that, seriously.
On one hand, I see how you posted about an idea. On the other hand, though, I see you posted the same idea that you posted.
o_O

Ignoring your serious semantic error for the moment . . .

My god Thats just ...Lmfao...
Eh, On Topic, I think It would be cool to have a Anime section, I think enough "wanting" can become "needing" lol, also I've been confusing myself with this one.... "Anime is only posted In the "Off-Topic" section, becuase it doesnt have it's own.. :scared: " lol

But the real question cuc, is how much does it hurt to put in this new forum? What are the costs of making a sub section for anime? It does alleviate some things, and organize a bit, while yes it isn't a necessity, what harm comes from doing it? I don't know if there is more bandwidth use from it or anything like that, but I don't think you will have a problem finding mods to run the section, and I think that it would make some people happy. That is why I vote yes.
To answer your question, it does make the database slightly larger. But it does nothing detrimental to to forum itself, the problem was never pro and con. Again, we simply do not support the idea because it is unnecessary. There is no need for it, yet there is no reason why it should not be done.

So in the short term, there is no harm, at all, caused by adding new sections. On the other hand, this will be the first section born out of want rather than need, something I would like to avoid.

To challenge one of your points; there is no need of further organization of Off Topic, this will alleviate nothing. Alleviation assumes a problem exsisted currently, something I have not been led to beleive in any way, shape or fasion.

simply because this is the earths special forces forums... anime isnt important so it should stay with off topic
without anime....esf wouldnt even EXIST....

but..what do u have to lose? if it costs more money to maintain the forum...cant the people that DO like this...like...raise a small fund so we can keep it up, as long as we keep it spam, warez etc etc free?

I'm just going to sum this up based on the previous posts and discussions:

  • A majority of forum users want an anime section.
  • It may help boost the community's involvement in the forums and make it more popular, pleasing them altogether.
  • It may make the mod's forums more popular hence indirectly promoting the mod,
  • There is no actual need to have such a forum section, as mentioned by the admins.
  • The forums will not die without such a section.
  • The admins and forum staff will fully support this section if the development team were to accept/add it.
  • The admins are hesitant because this is the first time a section would be added based on want rather than need.
  • Adding the section does not bring any type of harm or burden to the forums.
  • Adding the section may stimulate greater interest for posting anime-related discussions, and people will look at the ESF forums as a place to talk about Anime AS WELL (rather than going somewhere else).
  • We have enough moderators, including those interested in helping moderate that section, to support this new forum section.
  • We will not have any problems keeping talk about warez and downloads away from that section with our team of forum staff coupled with the rules and the AUP.
  • This may give birth to more requests for forums in the future (example, the hair styling one by SonicBoyster :p ), but in the end those will be chosen by the development team as well. Also, other topics aren't as explicitly related to ESF as anime is.

---

If anyone else has any more pro's and con's to add to that, or if I missed anything - please post so. @Cuc: Please confirm if I have missed, misinterpretted or posted any point wrongly.

So looking at the above, I think that the pro's outweigh the con's (they aren't even con's, just analytic points made by users/forum staff). Like Cucumba said himself, there is no need not to go ahead with this and the forum staff will support this if accepted. Rest is upto the meeting.

Your suspension of disbelief is amazing Groovy. You cannot know the outcome of this new interaction, to use a word indicating certainty is foolish. All of these are possible boons, if there were definitive boons, then this would be a need. Stop letting supposition and want dictate logic, it doesn't work that way.

For the last point, I would like to point out that this is most certainly not a new precedent; we will not be adding new sections on for every whim if such a section is indeed added.

Changes made, thanks. And this isn't a war btw o_O. We are all on the same side discussing a new section. I too will respect whatever the team decides, and will make sure all of your points are brought forward to the team before voting. I may have started this thing, but at the end of the day - I am a very unbiased person and have the mod's best interest at heart.

Isnt the force pit the first section based on a want rather than a need? You wanted to give people who donated something so they could feel that they "bought" a certain right, you had no need to.

It was to stimulate donations to the site, yes but that's hardly a want. That's the only section of the forum that actually pays for part of itself (miniscule though it may be). The anime section will not generate new donations in any tangible, direct fasion.

Nice try though, it's not as if I pulled my arguments out of my ass. Instead of trying to disprove my opinion by attacking my facts, try arguing with facts of your own.

I agree this is not a war, and I don't know why my opinion is constantly called into question ( other than all of you wanting a fourm so bad you practically need it  ) when my opinion is supported by solid fact.

@ Groovy, I've already made the administrations position known to Masta. I was careful to present it in a neutral mannor. Out of curiosity, why was the administration not informed of this idea before the public? You ran around normal channels and I'm curious as to why you did so?

I think you're making it a war more than people are questioning your opinion. You told us why you thought that this is a want rather than need, and we understood and posted so. You corrected the 'will's to 'may's, which were again understood and (not blindly) corrected. Chill out please? This very post is probably the first time your opinion has been challenged openly, and this thread has already gone way off where I had intended it to go.

Eh? You were going to tell him yourself, since I was planning on inviting you to the meeting with Masta's consent. And the administration was not informed before because I thought it's alright to make one thread rather than multiple ones, where the administration can offer their opinions as well. If the administrators were against this, nothing was stopping them from closing the thread long ago. And the fact that the head admin would be invited to the team meeting to offer his comments on this proves that no one has been left out.

---

Now for the last time, please chill out @ everyone. Let this thread be a public poll like it was meant to be, and not a thread for multiple-cross-questioning which can easily be done via PM/IRC/IM's.

I was never angry to start with . . . thus there is no need for me to chill out. I am "chilled". My opinion has been challenged openly several times . . . many on the processes and policies of this message board. This particular case is no different: my opinions differ from the masses, and I am not ashamed of my opinion nor do I see need to be quiet about my opinion when it is challenged. There is a difference of opinion, and I should not be expected to simply back off because my opinion is not the popular one. As far as I am concerned, this, and every other comment I have made, have been on topic, and moreover, they were very specifically within the nature of this particular beast.

Is AIM somehow broken, or did IRC go down for 72 hours without me noticing? My computer is on the net half of the day at least. Further, you could send a "post" directly to my email. Saving on space by not creating another thread? All I have to say is -> o_O

Further, I was never notified of that intent by you, or any other proponents of the idea. I am not a control freak, and I do not need to know about everything, I am just curious as to why the normal path of adding forum sections was bypassed. I'm not even angry . . . just confused as to why alternative paths were used. Have I somehow become unapproachable? Since the team meeting is this weekend, and I am not normally active during the weekends (something which all moderators, and especially you, as I cited it as a main reason for quitting beta testing, knew) wouldn't it have made sense to contact me sometime during the week?

Again I beg to differ, while the attitudes can get stuffed, all opinions posted in a thread about the topic at hand are not concidered off topic . . . especially when the difference of opinion has not yet been resolved.

Again, I thought it was alright to make a central thread and get the opinions of both staff and the public at the same time. I have already seen the consequences of doing so, and if it's an apology you are looking for - I am sorry. I didn't consider the possibility of your not being able to make it, since Masta told me that I could reschedule the topic to next week if needed, so I presumed that we would have been able to work out you coming for a short while during one of the two meetings.

Yes I am aware of that, but the reason I stated that was because when lot of the forum users see some sort of debate or argument going on in the thread, they don't post in that thread to avoid getting caught up in it. The intent behind my request as quoted in your qoute above, was to make this thread free of our argument which has a potential of going on for pages, and instead make it more open to letting everyone else put in as many votes/opinions as possible (before this weekend). It was too much to ask though...

There is no need to defend the nature of your posts, not once did I call your posts off-topic, nor do I have the authority to (in public). But what I meant by my post above was this: have a look at the last 5 posts of this thread (including this one, starting from Ryoko's). Although they are technically on topic, what is the main focus of the posts' contents? It's far from what this thread started with.

Well people are debating over whether to have it or not and the procedures to do so, so I believe the intent of the thread has remained flatline.
You think that an anime thread would help and what not,but once I got to thinking I realized there are alot of anime threads in off topic, but not near as filling as there was fight club, and that was a "need" in order to distinguish fight club from the rest of the topics.

Anime threads don't often tend to fill up off topic, so I think off topic can hold things pretty good.

That's just my two cents so far to add to the debate. I'll be here for any responses.

Word.

I personally don't believe that adding a sub-section to off topic as open ended as "Anime Discussions" will add anything to the community whatsoever. As hibiki has pointed out time and time again, if people wanted to have so many anime discussions they'd post them in off topic because that's what it's here for. I don't think it'll have any part in bringing new people into the community at all, if anything it might just make the ones we already have a little more interested in anime. Do you really think a google search pulling up ESF is going to make people join the community?

It'd just be another forum we don't need where people may or may not start posting hundreds of DBZ and Naruto threads. People could use off topic for anime if they chose to and they don't all that often.

To clarify: I was only looking for a clue as to why you didn't contact me in private first, not an apology. As I said, I'm not angry nor am I insulted.

Further, you have said, twice now, that the conversation has gone south concerning the topic at hand . . . I am simply defending my ideas concerning the opinion I posted and it really is as simple as that. Since my idea is in question and this idea is about the topic, defense of that idea does fall under the topic.

I will, however leave any further arguing to the staff areas and/or IRC, in accordance to your request as the thread creator.

There was no need to say that it was too much to ask of me . . . it's a poor arguing tactic that has effectively pushed me out of this thread because of my sense of fair play. I believe my position has been stated, any further rebuttal to my opinion should be deferred to [email protected].

I love anime...to the point where it is almost a carnal need for me. And having an anime section would be awesome. But to tie this into the on-going debate, we don't NEED it. Yes, I agree it would be fun and something new to have. Perhaps it would raise interests and encourage more anime discussions, perhaps not. But when it comes down to the decision making part, it is not a necessity.

I voted yes only because I want it, like a drug, I'm addicted.

Do some people want a anime section? Yes. Do we need one? No. Should we have one? No.

Off-Topic is good enough to talk about anime.

Result of dev team meeting dated 10th October 2004, topic #3 -Anime Forum Section?:

The team decided to add three new sub-sections under Off-topic, one for each of the following:
- Anime
- Gaming
- Technology

The forum staff will have private discussions based on the new rules that come into play, and create the new sub-sections shortly.
