All Steam games seem to lag

At first, hello,
ESF is really a great mod. I was a big Bid For Power Fan for Quake 3 2 years ago, and I always thought ESF wouldn't be even a bit as good as BFP. But now that I tried it out again, in the new version, it's really great. It's much more like DBZ really is than BFP ever was. Good Job on this :) But now to my problem:
Every game that's running on Steam seems to lag on my computer. It doesn't just feel like when you have a bad ping, but the game is just frozen for a few seconds. But it only happens with Steam games. I normally have a nice ping of 40 in the most games, and I don't have any problems with the connection in other games, if its not a problem with the game itself. But when playing ESF as well as CS it quite often lag. You might understand that it's quite anoying not to be able to react while being in a melee. So, does anyone of you know why it happens or how to get rid of it?
Thanks beforehand, I hope you know the solution.

Well, it could be 1. you're connection. 2. If you get a cl_fluch entity pack error then your computer is messed up (i doubt it on this one) 3. it could be the crashing but. 4. Update steam? Also ckeck your connection and stuff. Also it could be your computer. Is it old? Other then that i wouldn't know.

check netgraph by using net_graph 3 in the console.

Do you get any choke or loss?

I really don't think it's my connection, because as I already wrote, I only get these problems with steam games. And no, there is no error message or anything, it's just frozen for a few seconds, afer this it goes on normally. Updating Steam? Steam updates itself automatically. And no, my computer isn't that old that Half-Life would lag. Again, it's ONLY with steam apps, every other game runs normally, if it hasn't too high requirements or is bugged itself.

I tried it for a few minutes, but in this time it didn't lag. I only had 1 loss and 4 chokes for a short moment while I was choosing the character. Perhaps in this second it lagged. And now I don't want to go on trying, because 1. I don't have much time left, but mostly 2. ESF crashes about every 1-5 minutes, what really sucks. But I already read that it's a bug.
Big thanks for the help until now, I'll try the net_graph thing again tomorrow.

ok, basically what the net-graph will tell you is if your connection settings in steam are the cause of the problem. If they are, i'll help you set them properly so you dont lag so much :)

In the options I chose "DSL > 768k". And that's just what I have, DSL 1000.

Alot of the server hosts these days are running servers through routers. It could be possible that you are getting spikes of lag through the server's side. Once you find a pure server (No router, etc.), you should be fine. Otherwise, I would stick to what Orion has been saying.

I don't think that that's the reason, since I get this lag in all steam games, as I said. I noticed it in Counter-Strike, I noticed it in ESF, and I remember I also noticed it in Vampire Slayer. And the others on the servers didn't have lag, so it must have to do with my computer/connection/steam.

do this command:
rate 99999999
It should clear anything that is holding you back on your side that deals with Half-Life.

Your computer could be with like 1000000 pests and 99 ads on your machine could be an other problem.

rate 9999999 wont be the sole solution :)

You also have to tweak cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate - set them both to about 60 and then with the netgraph open, tweak them until you get no more lag or choke.

I'd also set a rate of about 20000 if you are on a 1mb connection.

I tried net_graph, but it didn't show anything abnormal during lag periods. My brother told me to use the Windows Systemmonitor to watch the performance while a steam game lags. Perhaps it's only a local problem with steam. I mostly think that it is one, because I can't even control the camera while it lags. Normally, when the server itself is lagging, the situation is frozen, but you can still move the camera. But no, it's completely frozen.

He already answered that. He said it's only for Steam games.
