First the good news: Unlike most of the posts I found while searching for my problem, I do not need help installing or configuring ESF to run with either WON or Steam versions of HLDS. The bad news: I am having a TON of stability problems with my ESF server under Steam.
Some of the members of this board I would be willing to bet visited my ESF 1.1 server on WON up until the release of ESF 1.2 ({mBd} Clan Server). HLStats reported over 6000 unique players were on my server since the beginning of this year. Now, like the rest of the ESF community, I am trying to make the jump to Steam (I have been using Steam for quite some time for my other mods such as cstrike and dod). Unfortunately, Steam does not want to cooperate. This is the best description I can give of the problem:
I am running Windows XP with ALL updates as of 6/8/04. This box runs HLDS ONLY, nothing else (no antivirus, no nothing). I have installed HLDS for Steam (the separate installer file, not the user version of Steam). After about 24-48 hours worth of use, HLDS (in either console mode or GUI mode) will shoot up to using 100% of my CPU cycles and will be totally unresponsive until I connect to the server and terminate the HLDS process and begin again. For someone who is trying to have a ESF server up 24/7, this is very inconvienent. My max players is typically set at 4 since I am limited in bandwith by my ISP. My WON ESF 1.1 server would occasionally crash after about a week worth of use, but since the program would completely exit (as opposed to locking up like 1.2), I was able to schedule Windows to detect if the process was running and execute it if it was not.
Now, the list of what I have tried in order to solve this problem: First of all, I disabled metamod and amx and ran the steam server without any type of modification. Same result. I then installed ESF onto my windows 2000 box and tried it there without amx or metamod. Same result. As of today (6/8/04), I have reverted back to WON using ESF 1.2 with metamod and amx installed. The server has presently been up a week with no problems whatsoever.
I know this was long winded, but I tried to cover all the bases in one post. So now comes the hard part: any suggestions?
