What was your gateway anime?

Man, these make me feel old. I can actually recall some plots from transformers, and I used to watch Voltron all the time. But the first anime that I saw that really hooked me was Akira.
And I too have moved onto more mature shows like X, Haibane Renmei, Noir (geez I like the darker ones ).

if beast wars was considered an anime then that, if not then it would be pokemon.. but nothing really got me into anime until i saw DBZ
