Hey, this mod looks great! Today is my only real exposure to it. I've been away from the HL mod scene for awhile and NS is just getting me back into it. But I have to say, ESF might take me away from NS!! ^_^

Anyways, I was reading the preview on redsaiyan.net and this quote really stuck out at me:

Internet
One of the big problem with game these days is the lag it cause on the Internet. Well, ESF found a great way of reducing lag by putting graphics, music and other things on the client-side. that means you will be able to play on your old 56k with no problem and still have a good match of ESF.
Excuse my French, but WTF? As far as I know, no multiplayer game has ever made you download the graphics and music and such dynamically while you play the game. Definatly no modern one.

???

Spin did not say anything about dynamically downloading files. He said that a lot of the graphics/sounds have been moved to the client side opposed to server side.

my point is when have the the graphics/sounds ever been on the server side?

If the graphics and sounds were on the server you wouldn't have to download anything before connecting to the server.

In the alpha alot of stuff was server side, so SPiN could be on about less lag and the like a comparing the Alpha to the Beta.

so, if understand right, the majority of the thinking is now handled on each computer instead of the server?

pcjoe, you are one of the coders I see, I would really like to see some input from you on this one.

I don't understand why some of the gfx and such would need to be stored on the server and then "sent" to the client. (that is what I think is implied when they say it is now on the clients side rather than server)

From what I understand, the server is just there to basically be a traffic director. (I'm not sure where you guys do your hit detection for the kills and such). But basically the server just keeps track of where everybody is and what they are doing. Then the client draws everything, and possibly does some stuff with who you are damaging and whatnot.

What spin ment is that things in the beta have better client-side prediction, and we use pretty FX to cover up some of the lag, hehe.

It was just when I first read that part the wanna be game developer in me screamed out "WHAT?!?!" But what you said makes sense.
