I did a quick search, and didn't find anything "new" relating to tournament ideas. So here goes.

I know ESF is a fast-paced type of game. But I think a tournament mode would be rather interesting.
General Low-down

As you already know, tournament is a gathering of competitors in one area to compete who is the greatest of them all. Like the World Martial Arts Tournament in DB/Z, only 2 fighters (1vs1) are allowed to fight, the others are fighting in a free-for-all in another section of the map, until the next two fighters are called in for the next match. This would probably work extremely well with the new melee system. For a 4 bracket tournament, the board will look similar to this:

|
|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|
|¯¯¯¯¯| |¯¯¯¯¯|
|¯¯¯| |¯¯¯| |¯¯¯| |¯¯¯|
|¯| |¯||¯| |¯||¯| |¯||¯| |¯|
^^
It's the best I could do with just "|" and "¯" hehe.
Rules
  1. At the start of the map, random players are given an opponent that is chosen by the server. Then put in random spots on the Tournament Board. There is probably a 2-10 minute wait so players can join, and get ready. After this period, players that join, are automatically spectators (Yes I know this would suck for late entry players.)

  2. Once all of the opponents have been chosen, the tournament begins with the first batch. There are 2+ brackets depending on how many players are in. If there are an odd amount of players, then a random player is chosen to fight his opponent, and the player that doesn't have one.

  3. Once a winner is found (Either by knock-out, or out of bounds [on certain maps, if any].), he moves up the ladder, and waits for his next opponent to be chosen.

  4. Once the last remaining players are left, they are pitted together for the championship.

  5. Once a player has won a championship, he is either given a certain amount of points, or 1 point in a new column in the scoreboard called Champion.

  6. There can be a limit on how many times players can win a championship in a tournament on a particular map.

  7. Inbetween matches, all players (except players in current tournament match) will be in a free-for-all mode, which means, kill everything in sight, ;) until it's your turn to fight in the next tournament match.
CVARS/Commands
  • Server CVARS
    • tm_warmup <TIME><TIME>- Specifies how long the warmup session should last, in minutes. What this would do is the following:
      • All attacks should inflict 1/2 damage (this includes melee)
      • No large energy attacks allowed (includes kamehameha, gallit gun, final flash, big bang attack, etc.)
      • Only generic balls, and beams are allowed.
      • If powerlevel will allow, you will not be able to transform.
        • After the warmup time-period, both players will have the option (This is for their benefit) to wait and transform to their transformed state.
        • If a player is going up against a character that has a permanent transformation, and is already in that form, they will still be able to transform, as long as they are able to.
        • They cannot transform if they are at or close to (positive side) their transform powerlevel.
    • tm_warmupthrowcharge <#> - 4 options can be used to set the maximum charge for throwing, while in a warmup session.
      • 0 - Cannot throw opponents.
      • 1 - Throw charge limited to 1/3 of the bar.
      • 2 - Throw charge limited to 1/2 of the bar.
      • 3 - Throw charge is not limited. You can fully charge the throw.
    • tm_throwcharge <#> - 4 options can be used to set the maximum charge for throwing, while in an actual match.
      • 0 - Cannot throw opponents.
      • 1 - Throw charge limited to 1/3 of the bar
      • 2 - Throw charge limited to 1/2 of the bar.
      • 3 - Throw charge is not limited.
  • Client Commands
    • +forfeit - hold this down for 5 seconds to forfeit the match. If you do this, you will not recieve any power boost because you excepted yourself from the tournament.
    • +giveup - Same concept as +forfeit. But instead, player quits the current match, but doesn't except self from tournament, which means he will still get a power boost. (This can be done if you know your gonna lose, and don't feel like being humilated.)
Awards

  • 1st place
    • 1,000,000 pl boost
    • Spot on championship board
    • Can choose who first opponent can be on first round of the next tournament, or sit out and wait until the final round of the tournament to fight.
  • 2nd Place
    • 750,000 pl boost
    • Can choose who first opponent can be on first round of next tournament.
  • 3rd place
    • 500,000 pl boost
  • All other competitors
    • 300,000 pl boost
Well, there's the low-down, if this has been mentioned, sorry, I just did a quick search on the forums, and didn't find any recent threads on this topic, and forgive me if it seems vague. I'll modify this message alittle more later on to clarify acouple of things if it seems confusing.

I have really hoped they would attempt a tournament mode in some fashion. I like the way you laid out the ideas for it and it seems like it could work. With the new spectator sdk being implemented in 1.2 this could work out well.

Yah, for the maps that have out-of-bounds. There should be a way to stop yourself in midflight instantly or relatively fast when you are thrown. Like pressing both Primary and Secondary fire buttons, you should use a considerate amount of ki to stop yourself either instantly, or relatively fast. There should be a stun count, for when you're in midflight. The stun meter would have to be close-to, or at 0 in order to perform this technique, and it should drop at a reasonable rate. On the other hand, this can't be used for like, when two people collide with simple melee and get thrown apart.

what does sdk stand for? r u saying that before the tourney begins, all the players would be in a normal deathmatch type fight for a certian amount of time to raise their pls?

No. What I mean't was, the server chooses a random opponent for each player, displays who their opponent is, via text on the screen, and a reticle where the player is. They do not fight in Deathmatch. Though that might work, but once the tourney starts, all players should have their health/KI reset, and their powerlevel's set to an average # so all players can have a chance of winning.

And I don't know if this would tilt the game toward someones favor. But the champion should get a moderate pl boost for winning, while all over players should get a slight boost in power.

*Modified 1st post* Added awards for getting 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or just even participating in the tournament.

If Earth League could ever monitor online games that were working in tournament mode this could be a thing of beauty. I don't think that a win should come by ring out though. Just make it knock out and your good. The design is sound and the rewards seem to be balanced enough. Hopefully this will get a look at by a dev.

Hehe. Thanks for the great responses on this. One other thing. Like older tournament gametypes (Quake III, Rocket Arena, etc.), you teleport into the arena. I don't know if this could be possible, but instead of teleporting, you should be able to walk into and out of the arena, and if a player doesn't leave the arena when told, then the server shoudl teleport him/her to the spectating area.

now for a tournament mode, each player would be able to walk around the entire map just doing whatever, however each player would be immortal until they enter the one on one fight.. they can brawl and wut not, but no damage would be given to them.. now around the crowd that surrounds the ring should be this invisible force.. no way can anyone walk in or out from that force.. now when its two ppl who are next to fight would be teleported to the ring.. there would be a count down, and they are not allowed to move until the end of count down.. there could be spectator seats in the crowd or around so those waiting can watch

WoW, I have to commend KrazyKilla for such an easy to read, well thought out, neatly organized and clear suggestion. I haven't seen one of those in a long.... long time.

Anywho, I've been wanting a tournament mode for a long time, just as I'm sure everyone has... power to the people.

well how about a normal DM untill you enter the ring
when you enter the pl of boath players get's avarage and lives are recharged
in the DM part you have a normal DM untill you get teleported ino the ring (something like warcraft3's 1 vs 1 turnaments)

Yah, that might work. There will probably have to be custom maps for those types of tournaments. One, because you need an area for normal deathmatch, and and area for the 1vs1 tournament, or for more fun, fight it out in the spectator stands :D. But yah, about averaging, there still should be someone just a tad stronger , or else the fight would just last way to long. I say a 3% difference between both opponents.

But then what is the award for? If the pl gets balanced you shouldn't get pl as an award.

Oops, as I was typing that last post, I forgot about the reward. :p , my bad. :laff:

Well, lets see. If we have fighting in deathmatch inbetween matches, then certain people's powerlevels would jump to a new level before they would enter the next match. Hold on, no it wouldn't. Everyone on the server would still be gaining more power, even the two players currently in a tourney match. So no, no averaging players powerlevels. :laff:

Gotta love the human mind.

Still gotta figure out what to do with the people that join the server late in the game? o_o Should they also just be in deathmatch, but not participate in the tournament, or should they be in spectator mode until the next round?

yea, the late comers should definately be able to be in FFA mode until next round starts so they have a chance to train to even up there PL's to that of the people in the tournament... and i dont think there should be restrictions to attacks in FFA mode, but instead Health should be restored upon entry to the 1v1 tournament "area" if u know wut i mean.
