I would like to ask - how difficult is it to reverse engineer the new mapping system in terms of edits and rips?
Next to impossible. While you can easily import OBJ files into any old modeling program the thing is. There is no asset decompiler since the compiler was written by LOD. So without the core files you cant really do anything. You have access to all textures, but not the model itself ^^;

Again, anything that can create .obj is good. Pretty sure this includes 3DS Max, Maya, Blender, MS3D, etc

Also if sketchup doesn't allow you to export your mesh as an obj, you could always export it as something that Max can import, and then finally export it as an obj in Max.
