Steam problems

I finally got esf to work at my moms work and now im trying to get it to work it home the only difference is they had t1 there I have 56k here. I'm at the part right after I have clicked on the shortcut at the desktop and now it brings up the steam menu and says update news in a box and it says preparing to play half life. It's said this for about the last 20 min so can anbody help me?
