Riddles in The Dark

1. It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter

2.A box without hinges, key, or lid,
Yet golden treasure inside is hid.

3.An eye in a blue face
Saw an eye in a green face.
"That eye is like to this eye"
Said the first eye,
"But in low place
Not in high place."

4.Thirty white horses on a red hill,
First they champ,
Then they stamp,
Then they stand still.

5.Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking.

6.This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

"If a tree falls in the forest and hits a mime, does anyone care?"

Looks like the first is Space, 2nd sounds like some egyptian tomb :p. Sixth sounds like either wind or time.

I don't think water devours birds, beasts and flowers, unless of some kind of flood. Beating the mountain down with water dosn't make a whole lot of sense either.

The sentance contains one mistake.

A leaf is in the middle of a pool, everyday it doubles in size. In twenty days it fills up the whole pool, how many days did it take to fill up half of it.

An electric train is traveling south at 30km/h. The wind is blowing north east at 25 km/h. Which direction is the train's smoke blowing?

Yes, you are right 2 is egg and it is from the Hobbit "It's egggssses my precious, egggssses"
I did give proper credit to Tolken though, note the title, "Riddles in The Dark" which is also the chapter title

"This sentance containes two misstakes"

Sentence is wrong. Mistake is wrong. Contains is wrong. That is three mistakes. The wording in the sentence itself can't be a mistake; it's just a collection of words. The sentence as a whole might be incorrect but that isn't an error that is contained within the sentence. Technically it's three mistakes, and you have to discount the fact that it actually says something with the words listed.

And I'm sure the egg riddle isn't originally from the Hobbit, but in fact a source much older question.

1. darkness ( not certain )

2. Egg

3. An eye in a blue face <- the sun?
Saw an eye in a green face. <- well then this must be ( in this case ) grass
"That eye is like to this eye" <-- blue outside, gold inside?
Said the first eye,
"But in low place
Not in high place."
so I guess it's the sun shining on a flower!?!

4. No Clue!

5. fish

6. time

I'm almost sure that 4 is referring to soldiers (or possibly their horses).

When they're champing, they're going down the hill of a battlefield.
When they're stamping, they're walking back up the hill of a battlefield.
And when they're standing still.. they're standing still. :D

It has something to do with a confused general during a war.

At least I think thats it. :)

Sonic, you have to remember a sentence IS a collection of words, and that also encompasses the sentences meaning. The sentence DOES contain 4 mistakes.

1. Darkness
2. Egg
3. Sun shining on Sunflower
4. Teeth
5. Fish
6. Time

Very good Scruffie and Prozac. You got the ones that you answered right. However, number three is Sun to the Daisies, not sunflower, but close enough.
