Go to multiplayer fight online filter click on the checkbox "are playing game" "esforces" in the pull down box filter update.

If you get downloading and initializing when you join, make sure it's not downloading maps or other custom files if you are on 56k. The server will timeout. Just about all the custom ESF items can be found at SPiN's Website.

Troubleshooting
Know issues with esf, and fixing them:

Issue: I can see through the models arms, and/or i can't see the beams for the attacks.
Problem:Esf won't look good in software mode.
Fix: Set your videocard to D3D/OpenGL if it supports that.

Issue: The installer ask for a 2nd disk.
Problem:There is a CRC error in the esf installer you downloaded.
Fix:Download and install esf again

Issue: Esf crashes to a blue screen at startup
Problem:You're probably using EAX or Aureal sound fx, and your soundcard doesn't support that.
Fix: Disable those fx and try again.

Issue: The mp3 music doesn't play, and/or you get an Wrong dll version error in the console.
Problem:The installer installs fmod.dll in the windows dir, instead of in the halflife dir, and there is an older version of fmod.dll in your halflife dir.
Fix: Copy fmod.dll from your windows dir to your halflife dir.

Issue: Some of my weapons don't work
Problem: You installed Akimbot, wich is not yet compatible with esf alpha 2.0.
Fix: Uninstall Akimbot, and wait for their new release
Thanks harSens for this information.

> FOR NEWBIES: WHERE TO POST WHAT: <

---

Since there seems to be very much confusion about what goes where, I have thought up a small list of what topics go where for all the new forum members....

Newbie Central- Pretty Self Explanatory, for easy to answer help questions of some kind, not too much of extreme help, and also to be introduced to the forum

ESF Chat-Talk about what you like/ dislike about the mod, stating your opinions, and just to have open discussions about the mod.

Off Topic-Practically explains itself, anything not related to the mod.

Help- For help with the game, EX: Crashes, need to find a patch, or need some help on using the forum vB coding.

Mapping- To look at maps made my members or to comment ton other maps

Models-Comment on models or to show off your own

Coding/Bug Report- Found a unknown bug? Report it here :D

Artwork-Wanting to show off a wallpaper/ Sig to show off, or comment on others.

Suggestions- State your open opinion on how you think would help improve the mod.

Miscellaneous - Post here about any other things you may have made for ESF, such as sound packs, or original MP3's.

Well I hope the new people read this, so flames do not get started if their thread gets moved. ;)

I see nothing wrong with this... This is newbie central, the first forum I even looked into, and I am sure thats where most new guys will look. However, a lot won't read any stickies...

However I am going to close it so nobody will post in this thread... Hope you don't mind Fatman

I would like to make it known, however, that the purpose of ESF Chat is somewhat in dispute among some members. Look for one of the admins (most likely Cucumba) to say something concerning what type of posts are to be in ESF Chat withing the next little while.

> DEFINITION OF SPAM! <

---

I just thought that maybe it would help the forums out if there was a thread that defined spam and flaming for the newbies who don't understand what it is.

Spam - Usually one word posts or posts that are fairly irrelevant to the thread, such things as a single post with nothing but LOL or other one worders. Also, restating what you have already said in a previous post after no one has challenged or commented on your idea.

Spam threads - While there is an off topic section, it is not meant to be a spam section. Such topics that make no sense at all or are just the incoherent ramblings of someone would be considered spam.

Flaming - Flaming is the making fun of calling names and just out right rudeness to another member of the forums. If someone has an idea and another person says "that is stupid, you suck" it is considered flaming. If you want to criticize someone's idea, do it constructively, by making an amendment to their idea or telling why it wouldn't work.

These are the definitions that I could come up with off the top of my head, if a mod, or anyone else would like to add or detract from them go ahead and do so.

Steer clear of the above mentioned posts and you shouldn't have problems with the mods.

Edit: I just remembered another one, it's what I'm doing now, editing posts, rather than double posting (two posts, one right after the other), if you have something more to say, just click the button in the bottom right hand corner that says edit, from there you can delete your post or edit it as necessary (which includes adding statements)

No offense Lone Wolf but that was spam in and of itself. It doesn't even apply to this thread. He's making a point, and as this is a newbie thread, it should be heeded. People don't seem to understand what spam is until they're warned a couple of times, and we don't need that.

Lone Wolf, Brim is in no way attempting to be a mod. As a matter of fact, the irony has it that you are... I would suggest not doing it again...

Edit: By the way, I have stickied and closed this, it does have some important info on it...

I would also like to add that these forums are not a chatroom. Too many posts have been made saying stuff like "I have the same problem" rather than helping. Another type of post that should not be made is one like "I am having a tourney right now!! JOIN IT!!" there is nothing wrong with posting about a tournament if you plan it ahead of time, but posting that you are having it right now causes only confusion and spam.

If you wish to chat, join #esf on the gamesnet network in IRC, and do your chatting there

(thanks to Lone Wolf for bringing this to my attention.)

Something more to add:

:notice: Do not double post while saying "Sorry for the double post". It doesn't matter if you say sorry or not, it's still a double post. Same goes for posting something offtopic and saying "sorry for offtopic". If you have to say something offtopic, add it as a PS, your post must contain relavent on-topic material as well.

:notice: When someone asks for help or any other question in general and another member has already replied with the answer, DO NOT REPEAT the SAME answer by saying "yes, do this blah blah". Because then your post isn't contributing in any way, but is just a mirror of someone else's post.

Ok seeing the large number of stickies was actually confusing, so I merged the useful ones into a mega rules thread, this one... and added some yellow headings to make the more important rules more prominent. Hope this helps newbies get to know the rules properly.

That's all for now, if more rules are to be added, mods/admins can add them to this thread. Hope this thread benefits the users in some way. =]
