Overclocking is the act of turning up the clock frequency on your component, which increases performance marginally, but causes reliability problems and potential damage to the component being overclocked.
It's dependant on your card's cooling and voltage settings. A lot of people buy better coolers for their card's memory and core to lower the temperature, as overclocking raises it. Some people will modify their card to increase the voltage to the memory and core so it can reach higher frequencies.
If you have decent cooling, then yes, it is worth overclocking.
