New video card

ps: this all depends on your system.. if you have an older system, then it wont matter that you get a 9800 pro 256ddr, since it will create a bottleneck on your system and you wont be able to use your fancy 256ddr card at max power..

as i said, save a lot of money and get the 9800pro 128ddr... its only like 250$ or something

as i said... dont save a lot of money and still get a high end videocard like the 9600 XT256 (fo with the pro's lol.. they're pieces of junk) and it's only like 180 dollar

serious lol... i dont see what people like in a pro while the xt is better and NOT alot more expensive

but you are right about bottleneck systems...
so actually super vegetto you should give us some specs of your pc heh.
but you asked if you could play doom 3 with the 9600xt 256mb and you can. since i have the exact same card.
well i have a atlantis saphire ati radeon and not gigacube...
though i dont really know what the differences are. i dont tink there are any.

the 9 series isnt worth the money anymore, go for the x600pro or xt as they will wipe the floor with a 9800pro

No it won't. The x600 is just a PCIX 9600 with a higher memory clock. The 9800Pro owns the x600pro/xt.

The Radeon X600 XT was first announced when the R420 was launched a few months back, but unlike the R420, it is not a complete revision of past graphics cores. Instead, the Radeon X600 XT has the same feature set and hardware support as the Radeon 9600XT, ATI's famed mid-ranged graphics card. Both the X600 XT and the Radeon 9600XT use the same four pixel pipeline architecture and include two programmable vertex shader pipelines. The two cards also share similar clock speeds, with the X600 XT clocked at a 500MHz core and 740MHz memory speed while the Radeon 9600XT is clocked at a 500MHz core speed and 600MHz memory speed. If you'd say that the Radeon X600 XT is a higher clocked PCI Express enabled Radeon 9600XT, you'd pretty much be on the money.

i suggest you tell us your current video card and computer specs before you go off and buy a new video card.

dont make the same mistake i did. i bought a video card (ATI Radeon 9800pro) thinking it would give me better frames in games..(lol it rhymes) but it didnt do anything. if anything lowered my fps. my computer wasnt good enough. but with my new computer.... all is well!!

PLEASE dont buy a 128mb card... if you are planning on running d3 and/or hl2 then you will definitely will need at least 256 mb.
since these games are based on cards with 512mb for the max settings.
In terms of Doom 3, that's a load of pig crap. My friend can play D3 on High with a 9800 Pro 128, which is much, much cheaper than the XT or an x800.

It is apparent that you probably bought an already half-dead card or malfunctioning card. The 9800 Pro is still a great deal, and you really get a bang for your buck. So unless you went from a 6800 to a 9800 Pro, you probably messed something up.

A 9600XT 256MB is definitely not a high end card. It's a low end nowadays. The 9800's being middle and the x800's being high.

If you have the cash go for the x800 pro or xt. The XT has slightly higher core speeds and 4 extra pixle pipelines, but the overall performance difference isnt that much better for the money you have to output. Im using a x800 pro and clearing 70+ frame mark in 1280x1024 in ultra in d3. Hope that helps. - If you dont have the cash its worth waiting a little bit!-

Um, the difference is very big. 4 extra pixel pipelines is a massive amount. And getting 70 fps in doom 3 at ultra is just bull, even the 6800ultra can't get that and it's known that the x800's, hell, that ATi's cards suck in doom3 based on ATi's sucky opengl drivers.

If you really don't know anything about GFX cards, don't try to suggest them. A 256mb Radeon 9600XT is a waste. 256mb for a low-end card is JUST a PR trick, it won't give you ANY extra performance, it's actually even slower.

A 9800 pro is A LOT faster than a 9600XT. And the 256mb Radeon 9800 pro is a waste as well. The DDR2 is slightly slower than the regular one, but runs cooler so it can be overclocked more. On stock speeds the 128mb version is faster. Another reason to buy the 256mb version is to flash it to a 9800 XT. A one with 256-bit 256mb RAM and a R360 core will transform into a 9800 XT very easily. Other than that, the 256mb is totally useless. So if you're not going to flash/overclock your card, i'd get the 128mb version, which is like 40% cheaper.

That said, getting a 9800 XT is a waste. For one, it's about as expensive as a lot faster X800 Pro, and the fact that you can flash a R360 9800 Pro into one with less money.

And about SV's computer... It's WAY too slow for even a 9800 pro to work on its full potential, but in future/current games it should give a significant boost. If you're getting it for HL and its mods though, it's a total waste. Getting a mid/high-end card for a low-end machine will actually make HL run a lot slower than your current card(well, that's what a 9800 pro did to my old machine :p).

But seriously, i can't see anyone suggesting a 9600 XT over a 9800 Pro... Except maybe someone who doesn't know what he's talking about.

Ps. I get around 60fps average on D3 on high settings and 1024x768. Yep, you guessed, i have a 128mb Radeon 9800 Pro.

Yes, i'd go with that. Cheap, yet fast enough to run D3 on high settings without a hitch :D

What maker? I would probably go with a MSI, since they have a R360 core, the best heatsink, and is one of the cheapest. Other great manufacturers are Sapphire(Just make sure they're NOT 128-BIT), Connect3D, BBA, Abit and Hercules.

Yep, that's the one. It can be flashed to a XT as well, but it will only have 128mb of Ram, obviously.

ATi is decent, all of their stuff comes from Connect3D and Sapphire factories really, so there's no difference between 'em(except the fact that some Sapphire's are only 128-bit, making the as slow as the 9600 Pro).
