Meaningful careers

I am starting to think about the future as I will start to study in 2 years time. I am looking for a meaningful career.

What is a meaningful career for me?
Mostly a career that helps people or contribute to the world in a way.

What I will never do is hi-tech for products like television or the next thing that will beat Blu-Ray, such thing will never satisfy me. The only way I see myself in Hi-Tech is developing products for scientists and the medical service.

In politics I can make a lot of difference, but it is a very shady bussiness.

I am currently searching for myself at the medical field, doctor mostly. I want to specialize in trauma, saving lives, not only improving them by curing a stomach ache.

What do you think, am I might missing something because I focus on the medical field? what careers you think are helping people and write 'em down here as a suggestion for me.

Don't worry, I only need a standard pay as a minimum, no $$$$ in my eyes.

The one thing that has been a constant driving force in aiding (and destroying) life is science. There's no reason to assume you can't do something high-tech. It's not hard. It requires you to study something dilligently, understand it, and then work from that to create something new.

Physicists, engineers, chemists, biologists, have all contributed to the world in some way. You don't even have to be good at what you're doing; since no scientific branch is simple enough for one person to perform some genius feat anymore. All science needs are people, and scientists and engineers are always in demand, everywhere. If you fail at engineering and researching ... those who cannot do, teach.

I did work in a hospital for a year ^^. I'm also a medical student. You'd be surprised how many people doctors kill unintentionally too. If it's something you really feel strongly about, it's a great career. Just remember it does take a fair while before you specialise in anything.

This right here is excellent advice. Also, don't kid yourself that you can make a difference in politics. You can't.

Most people don't accomplish anything because they're being paid to do just that: maintain the status quo. If you have nothing to lose, and you keep your nose clean, you're the most dangerous person out there in the political arena.

As for being a Doc, that's all well and good, but I guarantee after a few years you'll be jaded by the politics involved in that occupation. You won't feel like you're really making a difference anymore. I don't know that that's true for engineers and scientists in general as, short of building weapons, they are making a lasting difference in our lives, whether we realize it or not. Saving the meatbag is easy. Changing how we live and possibly improving the quality of life for your society is an achievement on a completely different level.

That said, I quite enjoy my profession. 99% of people don't understand why, but I enjoy my job and I can easily see myself doing it for the rest of my life, however short it may be, if I didn't have other plans in mind.

Well, now I'm dead curious to know your job class, onix... if you don't feel awkward about it, please do private message me and let me know.

You will have to stretch your imagination for this one, however, if I were smart and willing enough, I would have worked on building some insane machine that purges religious thoughts from human brains.
That's my aspect of "improving the quality of life for your society". I actually think it's feasible and more sensible than trying to argue with someone deeply religious. - No offense intended to anyone! I have religious friends and I am even in-love with one, but I am far too confident in the theory that it is more complex for an actual God to exist in comparison to many tribes inventing myths all the way from our primitive past. It's just so much more likely.

So yes, I'm either going to invent a device that improves the quality of life in some way - or - create a more simple-minded project (Games/Movies/Stories) that brings joy and insight to whoever would be exposed to it.

If you want a more direct input in affecting people, try being a defense attorney. Saving innocent people from being wrongly accused is highly underrated. I always go by the motto "Prevention is better than Cure" so there is something that can be applied there.

Besides that, I complete agree with Avenger and Zeo. Aiming to be an Engineer myself, I want to raise the quality of living for everyone.

Here's another little motto I go by, "If you do something, do it perfectly or don't do it at all."

I have decided, that Butchers are soon to be an extincted job, so I have decided to become a job that never dies. I have decided to become a Mortician. Its not a dying job and people are dying to see me. (Heh.)

But, thinking of the future was truly something that needs to be done in High School truly, but its never too late to decide your living til you have a family to support.

It's very hard for a male to break into the porn industry. A lot of the males that do break into it do so by doing gay porn first, so have fun with that. Also, it's not like you can pick a random male on the street and have him enter the field. They want someone to be able to get it up on command, last indefinitely, and finish on command. And then be ready to do it again if you need another take. Also, the pay for males is rather bad unless you're one of the famous male porn stars.


I come from a middle class background. I could have reasonably gone into any field that I wanted and my parents would have supported me on any level they could. Maybe because of that, deciding what I do actually want to do for a career has been a huge source of stress for me. I think I can safely say that there hasn't been a day that's gone by where I haven't thought about what I'd like to be, or what I'd be good at. I never got good grades, mostly B's, some C's (math..), and always an A in history. I've settled on going into court reporting/stenography, which as it turns out I'm extremely good at. The pay is good, the hours are flexible, and it's mind numbing work, almost meditative. I don't think I'm going to enjoy it, but at the end of the day, work is work, you have to survive.

My suggestion for something you want to do for the rest of your life?

Find something that makes you happy, and do it. I'd rather be stuck doing something I love then some dead-end boring ass money job.
