I am really having problems these days...

I am known to get very high marks,

just recently i got my midterms for grade 12, which was 96%

For some reason, I dont feel smart at all.

I mean, my avg is the highest out of 1,400 students, but I dont feel im smart, becasue I dont grasp things quickly, like some students, who have much lower averages.

In addition, i feel my "street" smart skills are so low, you cant even imagine..

Im just going through a depressing moment right now because most people are looking up to me as some sort of genius, that im not even close to being.

What do you guys think about this?

intelligence, and being smart, sadly, aren't really linked. i mean, i and others considder myself to be quite intelligent, i'm articulate, i can formulate good arguments from very few real facts that i happen to have at the time. i can solve complex puzzles, and have a great head for numbers and science just seems to... fit, with me.

but if someone told me it was fun to jump off a building, i'd do it. cos i have all the common sense of a squirrel on crack.

There are numerous types of people. Generally, though, high-normal intelligence does lead people to more successful lives. But people with high or extremely high intelligence have a much more spotty likelihood of success.

Problems with motivation and fulfillment, coupled with people's higher expectations of them lead to further problems.

there's a difference between knowing stuff and being intelligent.

Knowing stuff (thus getting great grades in school) has nothing to do with intelligence.

I'm only 25 years old but I'll tell you something that I've seen time and time again. In the real world, it's not what you know, it's who you know. That being said, don't concern yourself with standardized tests. Study, do well, and never think about it again. You're going to find that real world experience is going to be more valuable than anything you can find in a text book. Live, experience, and most importantly, have fun.

I've got a genius friend. Practically encyclopedic knowledge of things, very good at logic, a natural ace at math, an incredible guitarist. Just a very bright and curious mind in general. He's going to a state school now, and he was on the waiting list. This is because in high school, all he ever got was Cs and Ds because he would skip class all the time, never hand in his homework, but would still get an A on every single test. He knew every thing that was going on but he didn't care enough to go through all the motions.

The thing about geniuses, like Alea said, is that the higher you go up in intelligence the more likely you are to be just a bit crazy. Or at least, not adherent to societal norms. And society, most of the time, isn't always very accomodating. Look at Einstein's school performance.

By the way... I have a peeve against people who are able to achieve very well (such as being on top or near the top of their class) but are haunted by constant feelings of inadequacy. Listen, you're doing well. You can't do much better than you're doing. Most people don't do as well as you're doing. Your personal problems (not being "street smart") can be fixed and addressed... most likely at the cost of doing well in school, from the way you make it sound, but whatever. Find a comfortable balance.

Haha you really should not be depressed about this...

You're book smart. That'll come in handy in education. The other smart? The "bright" smart? Come with experience. You'll just have to wait for that one.

I wouldn't call myself intelligent or something, but I'm really quick at understanding things. Especially in scientific things. And I get pretty good marks considering that I do absolutely nothing for school.

Well if you want to know your inteligence then go make an IQ test (the real one not those things you get on the net)

Thatll show you how inteligent you are. School tests will tell you how smart youa are.

The thing is. Beeing smart is good. But you solve problems that just pop up out of nowhere slower than the people who arnt as smart but have a bigger IQ.

In the end it all comes down to how good you can use your strengths to your own advantage.

As for me. I have good analytical skills. I can logically disasemble situations into fractions that are easy to understand (allthough i do like to complicate stuff a lot ^^ but thats cause im lazy). On the other hand i have a lousy memory and sometimes wont remember what i was saying a couple of minutes ago.

Basically every pro has its con. Its just the question of finding the right balance :)

Botom line. Its nothing to be worried about. Just forget everyones expectations. And focus on what suits you.

Did your marks start dropping when you started posting on this forum? It does have the habit of draining your intelligence/smarts/wisdom/knowledge/testicles.

I've been here for years and I've always been chief brainiac for my year (I've taught parts of lessons and read textbooks for fun!). My friends also turn to me for help when they need it... Also my ESF skill has increased since I joined... XD that's one "theory" wrong!

Also IQ is a lump of camel droppings. Your IQ is only your ability to do IQ tests and that's it! Me and a friend of mine have similar IQs (128 and 129) but we are different! I have huge maths and science powers, he knows really odd words in the English language and seems to know everything about history and music.

IQ = 0 (Which some how in a mock I proved equal to -23...)

Ya that quote is so damn true its not even funny. Hell I've had a job where I didn't have to go in for an interview but my uncle knew the owner and I got a call from my uncle telling me to come on down and pickup my uniform and that I start tomorrow lol.

Anyways back to the topic at hand I'm not a very intelligent person but if I study on something like I did back in high school and burned it into my brain I would be able to get past that test/exam but then about 2-3 months later I would probably forget a lot of that stuff since really none of that school **** really applies.

Wait..Wait..I may have confused myself. Or I don't completely know the definition of "intelligence". I know there are differences between wisdom, intelligence and street smarts..But what are they? Because I might have been semantically wrong.

What I am saying is: Be grateful for the smarts you have. Street smarts will take awhile to develope. It's different from books and numbers.
