It won 11 Academy Awards:
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2004/

"For the first time since The Last Emperor, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won every Oscar it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director for Peter Jackson, Best Adapted Screenplay, and a ton of others for a grand total of 11 Oscars, putting it in company with Titanic and Ben-Hur for the most Oscars ever. As expected, Sean Penn took home Best Actor for Mystic River, while Charlize Theron nabbed Best Actress for Monster. Also, predicted winners Tim Robbins (Mystic River) and Renée Zellweger (Cold Mountain) walked away with the Supporting trophies, completing what might be the most predictable Oscars in quite some time. The only movie to win more than one Academy Award besides Mystic River was Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, which took home two technical awards, for Cinematography and Sound Effects Editing; all other movies walked away with one Oscar apiece."

Yeh, exactly.

Return of the King was absolutely amazing. There wasn't a minute of that movie I didn't like. Only 11? Not nearly enough.

You have LOTR hats? Sweet, can I get one...

Well what do you expect from a movie that already has a super strong support base before its made, and has taken so much time into its production. Quality is rewarded...and sometimes that is through rewards shows. Sure everyone expected it, and why not, it was an incredible movie.

Lotr3 was an excellent movie and deserves the Oscars; especially since the other two movies didn't win anything significant.

Only part I didn't like was the ending... everytime you thought it was over, another bit came. And another one. And another one. Etc.

Yep, that figures. They were basically waiting for the third movie before really giving out the oscars to it.

It was a great series, It deserved some recognition, but not THAT much. Personally I enjoyed the Matrix series more, Probably becuase I'm a bigger fan of Sci-Fi, than Fantasy D&D genre. Still a great movie though.

It should've won the Oscar for "Most Pointlessly Extended Movie."

They could've easily cut off thirty minutes at the end and the movie would've made just as much sense.

The garbage they included with the movie, such as Sam's Wedding, and Frodo saying goodbye about fifty times, should've been saved for the 'Extended DVD.'

No surprise here. LOTR was an awesome movie, and it's predecessors never won boat loads of oscars. It's time was due to win something, well actually, lot of things.

They obviously had to cut a ridiculous amount of material out of all 3 books. And a lot of it still didn't show up in the extended editions. I think everything they put in the movie was necessary to have, including all the ending stuff. It was all there for closure and was fairly necessary. For anyone who has read the books can appreciate the amount of time and effort to transcribe such a huge literary work into 3 movies.

I can't for the extended edition of RotK. 4 hours of sweet movie watching. It's going to be awesome.

He may have gotten confused since RotK was nominated for 11 oscars and happened to win them all. So he may have seen in the paper that it was nominated. But yes, it wasn't awarded until last night.

LotR : RotK, winning 11 Oscars doesn't surprise me....

It's a good movie and a good story, yeah only the ending.... Sam's wedding and stuff... that could have been removed....LOL.
