Well most of you guys are saying youd rather choose life over death, which is kinda silly imo but ok its your opinion and i wont change that, but i agree with Tassadar. Today prison has been made more fluffier than it use to be. They get to watch tv, lift weights, play around...cmon if i killed someone and went to prison and had all that...hell i would look forward to it. So watching them "suffer"..you're kidding me right? They dont freaking suffer...they have fun..they make friends and go play baseketball...o how i would love to see that.. :S The guy/girl who murdered one of my family chilling watching tv..o do i feel better at night..

The only freaking bright side to prison is they work..some..and if you mess with the wrong ppl you get killed so with that in mind why not just make it quick? Thats about it...MOst of the evil ppl in there kill others for the thrill of it. Sooo why keep them alive when they kill whoever whenever they want...how fun is that huh?

I think the death penalty needs to go, prolonged mental torture in. If you kill my family I'll take satisfaction in knowing that you'll be suffering every day for the rest of your natural life. And when you die, ill piss on your grave.

I think capital punishment should be decided on in a case by case manner..

Depending on the severity of someone's crimes, I think it is appropriate at times. If someone has absolutely no regard for human life or rights, and commits multiple crimes--murder, rape, etc.. and they have been convicted before, so it's obvious no rehabilitation is possible, then capital punishment must be considered.

You can't argue that it's an issue of Price.. because executing people is not cheaper than keeping them in prison for the rest of their lives, due to the outrageous appeal times people on death row are given.

If someone admits their guilt, and declines appeals, and is sentenced to death, then they are quickly executed. But if someone pleads not guilty, as nearly everyone does, then the process is dragged out so many years that the person ends up spending 40 years in jail, and THEN is executed! Double waste of money.

I don't think it's a revenge issue.. Some people just pose a risk to fellow prisoners, some people have zero chance of rehabilitation, some people commit crimes so grievous that citizens call for that person's life to be taken from them. It may sound unfair, but maybe strong punishments are a deterrent for crime. This issue must be weighed carefully. :/

I can't decide. I like to think it should be eye for an eye, but alot of people have different mental states. No two people are the same.

THats true...i knew that it would take a while but if that new law passes in Texas, 3 or more see you kill someone you dont wait in line you're sent to the front, which is fair imo. I mean there's no doubt that if more than 3 ppl saw you do it then you're caught. But for the most part i still say Yay for the Death Penalty!

there are appeals as alea has stated. A lot of the people who have posted act like the death sentence is pronounced, then 5 minutes later they drag him out back and inject him. They people have to go through a long process, and have ample opportunity to prove their innocence. Now they are even allowing appealing of appeals based on DNA evidence, so that is 2 opportunities to prove your innocence. Sorry, but I dont believe that you are innocent if after 3 visits to court and having tons of people scrutinize evidence, you are still found guilty. Sure you might say there are some weird circumstances like there are in movies, but the fact is, people arent going to set up huge elaborate conspiracies to get a guy sent to death row. They are going to shoot the guy, not spend 47 years plotting this scheme to get him killed.

And also as alea has stated, people of this type pose a hazard to the other people in the prison, and society in general. Chances are, very few of the people who get sentenced even want to rehabiliate, let alone actually doing it. If they are going to kill someone, obviously they think it was the right thing to do at the time. Serial rapists, killers, whatever, have a mindset. Its not something that just changes after a few slaps on the wrist and 20 years in jail. Jail has little, if no effect on the way they feel about what they did.

The three biggest problems i have with the death penalty are:

1. It really is the easy way out for a criminal.
2. The finality. Our judicial system is not perfect and people make mistakes, so if somone innocent is put to death, there's no undoing it.
3. It's cold and emotionless. All that's ever looked at is wether or not you did it. It shows no mercy to people why mental stability problems, or to people who have changed their ways. It shows no forgivness and THAT is it's main problem.

I'd have to disagree with those..

2-
Once someone is sentanced to death, and they appeal, they've got DECADES to appeal their case, lots of time for new evidence to be found, DNA or otherwise, so there's not really "no undoing it," until they're executed.

3-People get off of crimes all the time, (in a way) by pleading not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, and if "exonerated" that way, they are placed in a mental institution until such time that the hospital deems they are Fit to be sentenced accordingly with their crime.

Forgiveness is irrelevant. You can't just forgive murderers and rapists, because they're being punished for their crimes. By committing crimes, you rack up a debt to society which must be paid via community service, jailtime or, as a last resort, execution. Being sorry for what you did after the fact doesn't change what you did, and many people regret not what they did, but the fact that they were caught doing it.

But innocent people HAVE been executed before, and have been saved literally moments before execution. not to menton that 10 years is a helluva mistake.

What i meant by that are people who were raped and beaten and completely mistreated as children, and growing up with that made them unstable. People like that don't get off to often, not that i know of.

I'm talking about a complete turn around. I'm not just talking about regret, im talking about a complete change of character, like in Deadman Walking, or like Stanley Williams. People who don't just regret what they did, people who seek to right the wrongs theyve done. And why can't people be forgiven? Explain that one to me.

I say get rid of the Death Penalty and throw them into jail for life without chance of parole, which is much more worse then a Death Penalty.

With a Death Penalty the inmate suffers for a bit and dies, and I'm the inmate would rather die, then stay in jail for life. Prison life isn't easy and more cruel then a Death Penalty.

Life over death is irrelevant if it's life in prison vs. being killed in X years. You say it's inhumane, but what's really more inhumane? Letting someone live the rest of their life in hell (Probably a maximum security prison, and we all know what happens in prison), and then die, probably alone, or killing them in a few years, and not having to spend my money to keep them alive and well fed? Mistakes happen but I guarentee they happen less often than some of the people in this thread seem to beleive, and even if it was an innocent person, would you rather subject them to life in prison (where they probably aren't prepared for the sodomy and brutalization they will experience for tens of years to come), or just kill them off after they've failed to prove their case a number of times? No matter how you look at it it just makes more sense to take the life before prison does. It's more humane, and less costly to society.

People say "Oh make them suffer! Throw them in jail and let them die the long way!"

Who really pays for that? We do, not the criminal. No matter how long it takes Jimmy the Jagged Toothed Ripper to die, once he is dead, it's all the same. People somehow think they can torture criminals in the afterlife by making them suffer in life, and even if you are religious you know that's nonsense. Death is equal to death no matter how it occurs. Making them "suffer" in prison just costs me money.

I agree with Sonic too. I mean when im old enough to pay bills/taxes, etc. some of what i earned goes to those criminals who are living in a jail thats not as bad as it use to be. Doing something we ALL do at home which is clean/cook/hand out mail/picking up trash, etc etc. Wow they are really suffering arnt they? :S The only thing they are worried about is messing with the wrong crowd which AGAIN is displayed in our own society outside prison. So when you say let them suffer...they are not suffering. They are doing what we all do in our own houses. That to me is saying we'll let you live where you dont have to pay taxes and you get to live a normal life except you're only in a locked down prison. Which imo is like a boys & girls club or like camp...o no dont send me to prison where i can live life and not have to pay any taxes/bills!!

I, for one, hate this very idea of death penalty.
Even if that person caused a war, NOONE WHATSOEVER has any right to take away life.
As said before, what happens when the justice system goes wrong? one corpse higher then the minimum.

Notice, if the executioner presses the button over an innocent person, he, technically, commited a murder. and there is starts.

This is what i like in the justice here in Israel, no death is "justified" no matter what.

That doesn't really make much sense.

If you say "No one whatsoever" has the right to take a life, then you're pretty much condemning soldiers, abortion clinics, etc..

Killing is regrettable, but I don't believe killing in defense is 'wrong.'
If someone breaks into your house and has a gun, and tries to kill you.. Then I think you have every right to defend yourself with any means necessary.

You can't take the time to "aim at non-lethal points" on their body, because doing that could cost you your own life. If someone is foolish enough to take something to the level where one of you is going to die, then I believe the other has every right to do what is required to survive.

Saying "all murder is wrong," is acceptable, if you go by Webster's definition: "the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought."

But saying, "all killing is wrong," is flawed in my opinion, because there are several situations in which you have no choice.

That is absolutly not true. Depending on what level security prison someone is put in, they can do almost whatever they want in the facility. These people get better gym equipment than my school. I lived in a small town for 7 years, they built a huge prison there that created hundreds of jobs. The people in there were in for murder, manslaughter, or rape. They had a baseball field dude, a friggin baseball field. Not to mention the gym for exercises inside, they get good meals every day, the prisons here are soft, way too soft. Like I said before, some states in the U.S. cannot afford to keep everyone that commits a crime. That's why the 3 strike law was somewhat controversial in California, because it's hard to keep every offender in prison. Nothing will change that though, that's why we have capital punishment.
And assaf, I'm not sure if you live in America or not, but there's a guy called Usama Bin Laden that killed over 3,000 people here. And pretty much the entire country of U.S.A (and a lot of the world for that matter) wouldn't mind seeing him suffer a very, very painful death. That's why even most Democrats support the death penalty for terrorists.

So you are saying living with fear of getting stabbed to death, beaten up, getting raped, all day long, 24/7 isn't that bad?

Those are stereotypes of a common prison, things like that don't happen all that often. Usually the officers stop anything like 'that' from happening. My uncle works at this prison, and he tells me things are usually kept in order.

do you think he doesnt know what goes on in there. I mean if i had an uncle woh was the guard of the prison then im pretty sure i would hear stories..and if im not mistaken im pretty sure he would too.
