Look at the particle engine they added to HL. Makes for some nice effects. The HL enigine itself will run fine for a long time to come, as was pointed out by previous posts. Untill the source code of other older games (ie QIII) are released the adaptable qualities of the HL engine will continue to be popular amongst modders.

I hear certain whispers in the dark hearts of some team members that QIII/JKII would be a nice move when the ESF final is done and overwith. ;)

Wouldn't a decent engine to move to be Red Faction or Red Faction 2(forgot when its coming out)? Both of them have deformable terrain with GeoMod, and it would make ESF all the better with the ability to form craters wherever you shoot, and possibly have your character get smashed into rock and stuck until you press a button and level a small portion of the rock your stuck in, freeing you from the ground/wall.

I dont believe Unreal2 would be a good move but move to the Unreal Tournament2 because it is more multiplayer orientated but know they are basically the same engine. I would realy like to see a Mod for Doom]|[ because have you guys seen that game!
But both games arnt out yet so we have no need to worry, and i dont think the team will be changing engines anytime soon.
