IF they do change at some point, it should be unreal 2, since its a new engi, and it will be the next half life (e.g. just as populer)

 How much more do you think they can get out of half life the game shouldnt be too big right? The stuff they plan on putting into it is crazy big.You could see when you get shot with a blast youre body parts are splattered they kept that in esf because that happense in half life. That must mean theres alot to go.confused:

I hope u do know that it isn;t half life what u are playing but a new mod, something extra. U can make it as big as u want, it doesn't require space from half life.

The limitations of a half life mod isn't the size of it but the engine. Where it "runs"on. The problem is just that the half life engine is not capable of having too many things on the screen at the same time

Nazghul that limitation is caused by (don't hold me to this but I remember hearing something along these lines) Half-Life having a bad habit of rendering objects that aren't in your FOV (field of view) which causes the engine to work harder for no reason.

But if I remember correctly I think the Holy Wars team fixed that problem within their Mod. Like I said I could be wrong but Im pretty sure its along those lines.

didn't know that :)

all I need to know is that it has it's limitations :D

There's no need for me to know the rest

but thx anyways for clearing it up

:notice: maybe esf could use that problem fix too??

Halflife uses C++ for programming (mods) unlike most games which have thier own programming language. So halflife can have alot of more stuff coded (with more ease) then on other engines.
The quake3 engine is quite old. (1999) maybe move on to another engine, or even better TFC2 (updated halflife engine) so some things wont have to be re-coded.

To do with the thing about half life and rendering. well as far as i know until recently all games have rendered basically like that but PowerVR then created tile based rendering this renders only whats on the screen this allowed their much weaker GPUs to keep up to the GForce cards but now a form of tile based rendering is being put into games the first game as far as i know is "new world order" it allows them to multiply the polygon count over 100 times but now i think all games are gunna use it.

Im not a nOOb to the forums just posting.

You guys realize that the HL engine can actually render all the cool OpenGL stuff you see in the Quake 3 engine?? If we didn't have to worry about ppl that can't upgrade their computers to support OpenGL, we could toss out Direct 3D and render everything in OpenGL. Then HL could look that much more cooler :)

You said a incorrect thing. it IS in your sight of view.

Its simple. It draws all it can see. a door can open right? Its a entity. So the engine just only sees it open. To be prepared to show stuff when the door IS opened.

This is also for all other entities like water. actually, ANY entitiy is ignored. Blocked thingsoutta sight by entities won'twork cause the engine will look throught the entity to prepare itself for if you pass it.

That explain why?

Are you that much of a n00b not to notice its an april fools joke?

Water is actualy the one exception with this rule, the engine will only render whats behind it if its transparent. Other wise it doesnt. If you really want to see what is rendered and what isnt, just download some kind of a wall hack (im not telling you to cheat or anything) and you can see whats rendered and whats not.
Now the hl engine, yes its old and cant do all the flashy stuff like the q3 engine or maybe the unreal engine can do. But do they have the easy of editing? Thats what makes halflife so popular to mod, because its so easy. What made halflife popular? Its mods? No, it redifined the fps genre from the standard find red key here to open red door there. It added more life and more depth, even adding story to it. To switch engines would be to select what esf has currently and press delete.

Also i wouldnt say that half-life is the defining limitation i would say the HL engine could be pushed alot further but only with a higer spec computer, as it is an old game it cannot fully take advantage of new hardware devices like Data Prefecth,SSE2,hyperthreading 3dNow! and other stuff the engine is well capable of looking alot better than it is currently it would just need alot more raw power!

Why dont you have the MOD have *most of the cool effects that are in quake3 but disabled by deafault then those with higher spec pc's can then enable them a have a more grafically apealling game. Also are Half-Life's textures and skins limited in there size and colour depth?

*if not all
