Getting rid of that annoying PS2 Problem... PERMANENTLY

I've had this problem for like two years now, and each time
more frustrating and annoying, but I dont know why Sony would release an
Entertainment system with such an annoying problem, the fact, this happened
to me after the warranty ran out as well. I dont feel like paying for
another PS2 either, I just wanted to know, does anyone here know how the
heck to make this problem go away? All I hear out of the PS2 when it tries
to run a disk is:

shhhhhhhhhhht-CLICK-sht,sht,sht,sht<pause>shhhhhhhhhhhht-CLICK-<stop>

It sounds like its scratching up the disks and whatnot, I dont even know why
a problem like this would rise up, but my Sega Saturn had the same problem
like a year after, and it only runs games when it feels like it, I have gone
through various web-sites with over 500ppl complaining about the same thing.
And the only tips I have gotten is to get a CD Laser Lens Cleaner (doesn't
work 4 ****, by the way). And to get a Q-Tip to gently wipe the lens on your
own. That one worked but it only runs SOME games while the others sometimes
dont run at all. In the beginning of this problem none of my games seemed to
have worked. Bleh, this is why I prefered Cartidge games. Atleast they last
longer than CD's themselves... thats my opinion anyway :p

Also is it possible to use an external CD Player or third party CD Player?
Cause I am good with electronics and whatnot but im at the point where I
just dont care if the PS2 gets messed up. If possible I'd like to try some
rewiring or hook up another CD Player to replace the one on the PS2. Its
getting annoying -_-

Happens to me as well on Compact Disc games. I have no idea how to fix it and I am still looking for a way to do so. Hopefully someone on this forum know's how.

Supposedly you can get it fixed if you still have warranty on it, I only know how
to improve it but it still does the stupid little noises and the games take like
3-10 tries till they finally work. when this problem first rose up non of my games
ran at all.

I already cleaned it like a billion times. I know its gotta do with something else but I
dont know what, I've used Q-tips to wipe it across so many times because the Laser
Lens Cleaner doesn't work.

EDIT: BtW nice sig :p

Have you tried a cleaning type fluid with those Q-tips.

My CD player used todo something similar to that and that fixed it. (My dad did it so I'm not sure what he used)

If you have your PS2 vertical, don't. The flimsy magnetic lock that holds the disc sucks donkey. Put it horizontal.

If you are playing the blue or black (CD-ROM) discs, make sure you put two peices of tape parallel to eachother at the center of the disc. MAKE SURE they are equal length and they MUST be parallel.

Yea do this! The reason is that the blue/black-bottom discs are not DVD discs and are thinner. They don't spin very well and the eye has trouble reading it. The two same size pieces of masking tape is a sure fix, I had to do it for my sister's Harvest Moon and it works fine.

So take two SAME size pieces of masking tape (the clear stuff), and put them on either side of the disk, directly across from eachother, on the label side of the disc.

Two answer two previous answers...

1.) I always have my PS2 set Horizontal.
2.) Come again? Tape? Place them where? Also the Blue/Back disks do not differ
from the other DVD disks that I attempt to run on there:

All Types of Disks work when ever my PS2 feels like making them work.

Put the tape like this:( |o| )

Bad ascii art, but you get the idea; put the tape on either side of the spindle hole (for best results, use about an inch an a half of clear scotch tape, not masking tape). They have to be as close to exact in length as humanly possible for this trick to work, or it will make your disks chatter louder. Try this out with your DVD discs as well, it may help a little if they are chattering.

Adhesive tape, it's clear, it makes things stick to other things. If you place two small squares on opposite sides of the disc parallel to eachother (label side up), see if it helps.

The scratching sounds? It's the disc spinning off balance and the laser not being able to read it, the tape, believe it or not.. balances the disc.

Ok, thanks you two, I will try it when I get home and then reply tommorow and
let you guys know if it worked. So, all I have to do is place peices of clear
scotch tape across the hole area right? Doesn't matter which side?

Couple of questions to this:

Sometimes I leave my PS2 running for like a whole day (when im at school).
Because of the fact that if I turn my PS2 off I will have to go through all the
trouble of trying to make the disks run, I just wanted to know if the heat that
the PS2 brings out overtime will somehow damage the tape or wither away
the sticky part? If so will this damage the lens even more or will I have to
just constantly keep replacing the tape?
part? And if it will, does

DUTCH-FIX (so not for any other country, atleast not that i am aware of)

Or, you could go back to the store get the problem fixed, warrenty is one, but costumer service is two, if you find truble with a 'machine' or rather a product u can always go back to the store. IF they say u'll need to pay all expensives just ignore them, like it's being handled this way:

When u buy an product u can have an expection of HOW LONG the product will last, now this is important, when you buy a tv for excample u may suspect it lasts atleast 5-7 years, now u'll get 3 years garrenty, ok so far so good. now if this new tv breaks a day after ur warrenty expires (just an excample could be any time withing ur expectation) you can go back to the store and let them fix it, sure u'll need to pay a little but not as much as they'll first tell you. Seemingly so i noticed while paying attention in class (detail/marketing) you can actualy SUE people if they sell u crap that breaks just after warrenty when UR expectiation is higher and get a refund/new product.

atleast so calls (the) ' het Burgerlijk Wetboek" (sivilian lawbook).

=====================

but otherwise i have no idea :(

Final solution:
This is if your laser is completely rooted - buy a replacement laser unit - theyre expensive but if you gotta play FFX2 then its worth it.

I already beat this game like 6 times, im just trying to get the last Dresssphere, I got tired of trying to get the perfect ending, only have 96%. Anyway, I tried that Clear tape thing, I dont think im doing it right :x It doesn't work, can you try another Ascii art? :p

I ran a tape across the middle of the disk, itt wont run the game at all, the
thing that does down the hole of the disk is getting blocked -_- unless thats
not what I was supposed to do :p

Don't put tape over the hole! LOL.

Put two peices of tape paralell to eachother on either side of the hole, just make sure they are opposite from eachother and that they don't actually cover the hole.

lol, oh ok. (Obviously, I thought you were being sarcastic at first with the tape
thing). Anyway, I'll try that. It has to be on which end again? (Just want to
keep clearing some stuff up), But im guessing the side with he image of the
games.

ASCII ART!

( <-disk edge
o <-disk center
| <-tape

( |o| )

As you can see, the tape is on either side of the hole, equal length, and paralell. The side of the tape should touch the edge of the hole, but not go over it.

See I thought that the || was the tape going across the hole :p But I got it
now, thanks.
