First off you should play FF6/aka FF3, it was on the super Nintendo in 1994, and it was released again back in 1997 or so bundled with FF5 on the PS1 called FF:Anthologies if I remember correctly. I would recommend the SNES version because I tried playing the PS1 version and it was bad, random battles took about 10 seconds to load, there was slowdown in game when performing attacks, the music would slow down as well with these attacks. However I think it might be easier to locate the PS1 version of FF6 than the SNES one.

If you haven't all ready played Chrono Trigger do so now, it was on the SNES.

Chrono Trigger,
I thought that was one of the best SNES games. I liked the tecks that took 2 to 3 people.

FF2 (american) It alright, i have it for SNES I got to the final Dungeon, Found it REALLY hard so i kinda forgot about it.

Have no-idea about FF 1,2,3 think they were for NES or somthing

You neglected that it is also quite possibly the best game of all time.

If you haven't picked up the clues by now Chrono Trigger and FFVI (3 American) fans are always bantering back and forth over which game was the greater RPG. They're both excellent games, Chrono Trigger being more philosophical and technological, with a solid story and multiple endings, and FFVI being more... Final Fanatasy meets the industrial revolution which is heavier on story, takes longer to get through, and has (IMO) a more rewarding ending than any of CTs. Then again, it's always nice to be able to beat CT at different times and get different endings, they're all just a little short for me... good nonetheless.

FF6 is very heavy story/drama with a dash of comedy thrown in at the appropriate times, whereas CT is heavier on comedy with less drama and a shorter story, if that effects your decision at all. Both games are incredibly fun to play through, though getting into FFVI is a little more tedious battle-wise (since the combat isn't quite as colorful as CT's).

Anyway, this isn't about CT. If you are only going to play one game from the FF games before seven make sure it is FFVI, and whatever you do don't stop playing. There are times when it feels a little tedious playing through (with so many random encounters) but by the half way point of the game it's already paid off and then some. Just whatever you do don't go reading around on different websites that explain what happens. Even if you think you already know, find out step by step, it's worth it.

FFV is a very interesting take on FF games. It uses a job system like FF3 although more advanced and slightly more interesting... it's a different play experience to be sure. The only gripe I have about FFV is that by the end you're gaurenteed to have a party of ridiculously overpowered characters by the end. EVEN SO you CANNOT beat the damn monster-in-a-box that is friggin 20 feet from the end-game boss that I beat on one run through >.> W/E.

FFIV (Final Fantasy 2 in America) is another good game, heavily story centered, completely linear, but a fun polished experience. The American version really toned the game down and made it easier, but it makes a nice introduction to the SNES FF games.

FF1/3 are um... well they're good games, just not... well uh... if you come across an NES and somebody you know has a copy of the original Final Fantasy take a spin on it. It's a really fun experience, really difficult, but certainly different. Sometimes simpler is just more fun...

Eh.. my personal ranking of the FF games would be like... 6 > 5 > 4 > 1 > 2/3

Whatever you do, wherever you go, whoever you are <.<, you have to play through Final Fantasy 6 before the oldschool SNES RPG fans will take your FF rants seriously >.<

Get the PS2 version. Final Fantasy Anthologies, I think it's called. it has enhanced versions of both Chrono Trigger and FF3/6, both with rendered cinemas...with the cinemas, Chrono Trigger's entertainment value goes up massively, as they are huge budget Toriyama animations and just in general are full of great scenes.

Both games are great, you really can't go wrong, but if you're looking for the less tedious of the two, go with CT. It's shorter and sweeter but the fighting system's a little cooler, and in general it takes less effort to get into (meaning, FF3 can only be seen for it's true awesomeness after playing through a lot of it already. CT is cool enough from the beginning to keep you interested throughout).

FF3 owns so much, I highly recommend it.

There isn't focus one any one character, each character hs their moments, their really isn't a "main" character unless you count Kefka, the villain, as a character.

I recommend it, the storyline is so addictive, if any FF movie was to be made, I wish it was out of FFVI

I personally enjoyed FFV a lot, the ability to change jobs for any character was one of the coolest things ever. Although, after getting to the point where I could either fight the final boss or lvl up a lot, I lost interest because I decided to master every job for every character...bad move. But anyways, all pre playstation FF games are killer, they dont get flashy looks so you get a lot of storyline, and strategy. Not to knock on FFVII, which is the most popular ever, but there is something about hearing SNES battle music that makes my nipples hard...I mean...

Well, they have remade FF 1 and 2 on the PS1, I own those 2 on PS1, and I think that they were interestingly update. They were VERY difficult on the NES, I won't lie. The first 2 FF's demand a great deal of patience - the majority of the time will not be spent developing the story, but instead your stats, as the enemies get pretty strong pretty fast. However, the remake on PS1 does feature a difficulty setting, so if you really don't have the patience to keep up with the enemies, they can be toned down, though I much preferred the challenge, myself.

FF3 is only available on the NES...and I really haven't seen it in America, not even remade. However, like the first 2, it is a pretty solid RPG...but was quite limited by the NES...so the story almsot seemed a little....vague.

FF4 has to be right up there for me with FF6. FF4 had an amazing story, well-developed characters, and is quite challenging. I really liked the gameplay, particularly the penalty for running away from battle >=) You can get FF4 ported to PS1 through a game called Final Fantasy Chronicles, which also comes bundled with the best RPG ever created - Chrono Trigger.

FF5, as mentioned, is interesting. It uses a reasonably intricate job system, leaving a lot of combinations for your party....heck, if you were so inclined, you could have a group of monks everywhere you go, taking out the big guys with meditation and remarkably damaging melee blows. I think the story was ok in this one, but overall, I preferred FF4 over this one. You can get this one ported to PS1 in the form of Final Fantasy Anthology.

FF6 is phenominal. In fact, if it weren't for FF4, this would be the only FF that stands in 1st place for me. It has an AMAZING soundtrack, extremely well developed characters, a first-rate story, complete with a crazed villain who will stop at NOTHING to get you out of his way....and recurring, rather funny villains that hate you eternally for having beaten them once or twice (think Ultros, gents ;)). The special abilities the characters get are really neat, particularly Sabin, if/when you see him, if/when you get FF6....it's just VERY well done, a very big recommendation on that. It is also available, packaged with FF5 through Final Fantasy Anthology.

And...yea...that's my bit ^_^

As many people have said, 6 (3 in the States) is the best. However, you run into a problem with trying to get it now; you either pay upwards or $90 for the SNES cartridge on E-Bay, or you get the horrible PS version, where the battle and music slows down every time you attack.

Here's the solution; buy a more recent Squaresoft game, whether you want to play it or not. Then hop online and get an emulator and the FF6 rom. Bam, Square gets thier money, you get your PLAYABLE game. Install a video/audio out card in your PC, then hook up a controller, and you have the complete original experience. Enjoy.

I still have the FF1 cartridge Magus!

Who are some of your favorite characters from FF6 guys? My main man was Locke Cole
<-- he was the stealing masta. Hell, FF6 actually had items that were worth stealing. Zozo + Locke = 1 Rich ass party, atlas armlets, jump boots, and goggles for all.

I've heard rumours of a PS2 release for Final Fantasy 1-6 on a DVD or two as a collectors edition but very little else was noted - if only it were true.
