it's only a 2 disc game and yes, the ending is sad. Best ****ing music for the credits though. If anyone hasn't heard it, then you should.
Seems you are right, I do wonder what the 4 CD is for then though: (Chrono Trigger)

YouTube - Chrono Cross - Ending Theme

Every time I listen to this song, I alway get a little choked up.
wow childhood memories haha, i remember i attempted to learn playing guitar after this game

Nobuo Uematsu is brilliant.
The surprising thing is Nobuo didn't help Yasunori Mitsuda with Chrono Cross, Nobuo did Chrono Trigger though with Mitsuda, however Chrono Cross was just Yasunori, hes brilliant as well and very underrated.

Indeed. When I found out that Uematsu wasn't doing the soundtrack for Chrono Cross, I stopped looking forward to what I might hear once I got the game. Fortunately for me, my pessimism in the matter was greatly unfounded, and the CC soundtrack was brilliant. Mitsuda is, in his own right, an awesome composer, as well. The pieces he composed fit the atmosphere, setting, and theme in Chrono Cross perfectly.

I believe he also composed the soundtracks for the Xenosaga games on the PS2.

EDIT - Here's a slightly more exhaustive list than my own.
