The best is whoever has the style you prefer. You can sit here and argue you either way, but it comes down to the sounds you like. There is, and never will be, a "best guitarist".

i disagree. a guitarrist can be measured by both their technical skill, and their "soul". ei, how much love they put in, and effort.

if i practiced 14 hours a day like vai did, id be that good, but i doubt he actually has to put much effort into his playing anymore. whereas if you watch satriani play, he loves every single note, every phrase has expression and meaning. theres very little mindless widdling. but hes also extremely technically proficient, which is why i think he is the best.

You missed out on everything I just said. Argue all you want, but you are never going to find the BEST guitar player. It's about what people enjoy. I think Hendrix sucks, only because I hate his music - some would argue he is the best in the world. Whereas, I may be inclined to think Adam Jones, and Mike McCready are the best; only because I enjoy their music more than anyone mentioned.

Just like who you want.

Omg, I feel so ashamed. I totally forgot about my favourite "insane-speed shred guitarist," Chris Impellitteri. Sure, lots of Impellitteri songs sound kinda similar, but they still have a fair share of unique, sweet songs. This guy is probably the fastest man i've ever seen play the guitar. And the the reason I like him is because out of all the super speed shredders i've ever heard, his songs and crazy solos sound the most like actual songs, as opposed to just scales.

This video doesn't show that off to well, but it does demonstrate his ridiculous speed. It's so fast it doesn't even look real.
