Radeon 9600 Pro XT beats the 9700 in alot of tests 8), but get a 9700 and overclock it to Pro for extreme performance .

I'd go for radeon aswell, tho Nvidia have nice drivers, meaning that you might last longer with an FX, because the drivers have an increase in performance.

As it stands now, the GeForce FX 5700 and Radeon 9600XT are essentially neck-and-neck. Their performance difference in Halo was practically negligible as it barely registered. (NVIDIA claims that the GeForce FX 5200, a $130 or so card, is also a DirectX 9 card and in theory, it is. However, I can't recommend using it for anything involving full DirectX 9 as the result is a slideshow. By contrast, the Radeon 9200 is not a DirectX 9 card, although ATI has just announced the Radeon 9600 SE, a $129 card that is DirectX 9 compliant. However, I do not have one of those cards for testing as they are not available.) Both ATI's and NVIDIA's current $200 cards perform admirably up to 1600x1200, where both start to lose some stamina.

On the high-end front, I have to give the edge to ATI's Radeon 9800XT over the GeForce FX 5950. Even though the cards perform similar with each winning their own handful of tests, I believe that ATI's architecture (8 pipelines, 40 instructions versus 4 pipelines and 12 instructions per clock cycle) is better suited to the upcoming games that will demand a lot of horsepower. While both are strongly competitive with current games, the future games will most likely perform faster on ATI's hardware. And, of course, don't forget that all of ATI's new cards will come with a voucher for Half-Life 2, a bonus that's hard to ignore. •

There's a plain and simple reason why to get a radeon. But i'm looking forward to Doom3. And there both coming out April2004 (hopefully). A double wammy--Getting Doom3 and the getting Half-life 2 (thats "supposibly free)? I can't disagree with that.
*EDIT- Stratch the HL2 in April2004 http://www.gamespy.com/games/release/

And thyne Nvidia supporter steps in.
First off, it would be best to know your budget, if your looking to spend around 150, then an FX 5600 might be for you. If your going to 200 then I would get a Radeon, somewhere around 9600-9700, granted you can find one that low. If you got around 250, then maybe a 9700 Pro is something to look into. My friend has one, there quite nice. For around 300 you could probably pick up a FX 5900.
If you have enough to get the BEST card, then I would go with the 5950, keeps up with the XT in a lot of cases, and once Nvidia fixes their drivers, it should be one of the best again.

Thats my shoe in, all up to you though.
