A better guess at what the "Z" stands for would be for the word "Zenkai". Just a guess, since the phrase "Zenkai Power" is used like crazy in the ending of the Japanese version of the series.

The Z in DragonBall Z stands for Zen Buddhism and the main reason that they put that there, is because this DragonBall series is where Goku has defeated *or will eventually defeat* many high masters of the arts. The GT in the DragonBall GT stands for Grand Tour.

Zen basicly means that you don't need your teacher anymore (like goku didn't need roshi anymore).It means that you found your way and that you believe 100% in yourself.
