I read all of the help threads on this page and I still can't find an answer for the "cannot open the library cl_dlls/client.dll" problem. Every time I try to run a game I get this problem.

I'm currently using the Beta 1.2 version. I'm going to try to update to version 1.1.1.0 of Half-Life and the latest version of ESF, 1.21 or whichever it is. Is this the only way to fix the problem? I hope so because there doesn't seem to be a clear answer anywhere on the threads.

And yes, I tried replacing the fmod.dll file, even after figuring out that the sticky link is broken and finding a real one. Suffice to say, it didn't help. Any suggestions and/or answers would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

just a note - this isn't the official thread at all :)

Have you tried using steam?
1.21 is the latest version of steam - try that on steam and let me know how you get on.

There are more of these threads then any other thread x.x Use the search button.

It means that the version you have is different from the servers for example:

You have 1.2 while the server has 1.2.1 . Something to that degree.

Firstly, I'm not using a server. I downloaded the game to play on LAN within my house only... no internet involved. And there is no dedicated server involved either. Was just trying to create my own game without steam.

Secondly, if there is an official thread, why is it not stickied? And the one that is stickied... why is the link broken and why has the question not been properly answered? I'm not the only one who was still asking in the Beta 1.2 5 page stickied thread.

Lastly, I managed to override the problem by patching Half Life to 1.1.1.0 and ESF to 1.2.1. Both of these helped and I was able to play the game. However... I recently tried to start another game and it said that my ESF executable is out of date. Be advised that as soon as I'm done with this entry I will search these forums for an answer to this new problem. Just letting you know how it worked out.

Thanks for the helpful portions of your replies.

Haven't you been listening? He's trying to play on LAN. LAN doesn't use WON. LAN means Local Area Network, and has nothing at all to do with internet. But yeah, you would have to get Steam if you were playing on the internet.

And the solution to your "new" problem:

Run Half-Life, NOT using the ESF executable. Go into custom game (Or whatever it says, it's been a while since I've used 1.1.1.0) and select "Earth's Special Forces" and then click "Activate". Problem solved.

Thanks for clearing up that last part Amnestometh. I fixed the problem and yes, I'm playing on Lan, not WON. I'm not even connected to the internet when I play so it can't really authenticate with the WON server or anything. Anyway, it's working fine.

The second error only occurrs when, oddly enough, I -am- connected to the internet and try to start a LAN game. Then it will give me the message concerning my executable being out of date. I just have to make sure I close my internet connection before starting a game. (I connect to the internet at 26.4 kbps mind you, so playing online isn't really an option... ergo, neither is downloading Steam.)

Thanks all.

*sigh* You need WON or STEAM in order to play either lan or online. That's why you keep getting that error. Because it's WON. Won died, not only that, but it's so old, it doesn't even update itself. That's why it says your executable is out of date. With steam you wouldn't get that because STEAM automatically updates itself. beleive me i know what im talking about i have been playing on won and steam for over a year, not only that but i have been playing this game for over a year

The only problem you would have with steam is it would take days for it to upload.

When you are playing on Lan, you are using won to do so. Hence the reason you get those errors. And steam is only 700 kb. The update for half life to the 1.1.1.0 patch is ohhh say what? 71 mb?? Something around there. I don't remember.
